Bump...is there a lawyer in the house...
The answer will be effected by your jurisdiction - ie. what country or state you're in.
Here is some good information on adopting in Washington:
http://www.nwae.org/washington.html#Laws%20covering%20all%20adoptions:
Specifically:
Quote:Are there any exceptions to the requirements?
If you are adopting the child of your spouse (a stepchild) or if the person being adopted is over the age of eighteen (18), pre and post placement reports may be waived. However, the court may require specific reports to ensure that the adoption is in the best interest of the adoptee. (RCW 26.33.220)
And:
Quote:INDEPENDENT ADOPTIONS
Adoptions completed in Washington State without the use of services provided by public or private adoption agencies are generally referred to as independent adoptions.
Children available for independent adoptions may include:
healthy infants;
stepchildren;
relative adoptions; and/or
other non agency placements.
I think it will be a little trickier than just having your ex sign something saying that he wants his rights to be terminated.
Hire a lawyer!
Good luck!
