I was changing money once't in Canadia, and i got one of the old twenty dollar bills, which showed Bessie in her coronation regalia. So i asked the lady, in my best clueless country boy accents: "Who's that lady in the funny hat?" She gave me a perplexed look, so the cashier on her right leaned over and hissed: "He means the Queen." So the cashier who was serving me straightens up and says: "Oh, that's the Queen." I responded: "You're kiddin' me . . . that guy looks just like a woman!" They were not amused.

This subject was also discussed on a similar thread among Australian A2Kers. One of them said "Good! We will have one less queen."

QANTAS is taking over aboriginal australia?

By the way, the last referendum on Australia becoming a republic certainly was rigged...we were offered three different models, and told 'we'll vote first to see if we want to become a republic, and then decide on the model'.

I certainly won't vote for a model that mirrors anything like the American presidency - it amounts to an elected king (I asked a number of them to explain it to me, and each time that was the impression I received), who battles parliament for power. The current system works fine, and if someone said "Let's make Australia a republic, but change the title of the G-G to President', then I'd be happy to vote for it.

That said, it bothers me not one whit that Australia is a constitutional democracy either.

That is a naive point of view, which is either prejudiced or ill-informed. This is not the venue for such a discussion, however, but if you start a thread elsewhere, i'd be happy to respond.

Well, this is none of my business, but I'm certainly interested in how it all works out.

Of course we should bugger off the queen.

Shoulda done it years ago!

We've got plenty of queens of our own, especially in Sydney!

And I vote for the Eureka Stockade flag - when we tried to take control in 1854! (yes, I was there, smart-asses!)

Which reminds me that the name Subaru is Japanese for the constellation Pleiades.

Is that the same?

Maybe the country could be renamed Subarulia. Could be a good earner.

Nah, the Pleiades (or seven sisters) is the LMC (from memory) the southern cross is Crucis.

The former is a northern hem constellation and the latter southern.

Yep, it wasn't that honourable a cause in reality. Lots of old world rivalries (irish v english, catholic v protestent, white men against every other race and gender).

Mateship and a fair go. No taxation without representation.

We swear by the Southern Cross to stand truly by each other and fight to defend our rights and liberties

Beneath the starry flag of rebellion, that oath was taken by hundreds of gold diggers at Ballarat in 1854. The Eureka rebellion led by Peter Lalor was a short lived revolt against petty officialdom and although a military failure, led to political and personal benefits for manyeurekapaint.jpg (9305 bytes) Australians.

The original Eureka flag, first raised on Bakery Hill and then flown over the Eureka Stockade and torn down by Trooper King during the bloody battle in the early morning of Sunday December 3rd, 1854, is now proudly displayed at the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery.

Australia's only rebellion is a highlight of history and inspiration for poets, novelists, journalists and filmmakers.

The Eureka Story

You know I think your right. Kangaroos are dumber than sheep. Koalas are like "HUH!" Wombats eat, root, shoot, and leaves.

So your ideas for a flag dlowan? Put up or shut up.

I kind of think flags are tacky.

Perhaps a little black flag? very understated? Perhaps with just a hint of diamante?
