Holocaust Survivors, Heirs Fight On for Compensation
Though Germany Long Ago Satisfied Most Claims, Many Remain

TELTOW, Germany -- Six decades after the end of World War II, tens of thousands of Holocaust survivors and their heirs are still struggling to receive compensation or the return of looted property from Germany.

More than 76,000 claims filed by Jewish families and other Nazi-era victims who had owned property in the former East Germany remain unresolved. About 60,000 Jews who applied for special pensions payable to people the Nazis forced to work for subsistence wages in ghettos were turned down. And owners of stolen artwork complain that efforts to find their collections have been stonewalled by German museums, despite a 1999 pledge to clear up the issue.

Full report in today's Washington Post
[Teltow, btw, is a town in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district, in the state of Brandenburg. It is part of the agglomeration of Berlin, with no recognizable border dividing the small town from its big neighbour Berlin, which is (still) a state.]

speaking as someone with german ancestors (that left,) germany just f***ing sucks ass.

don't get me wrong, so does the place they left for. the good news is that there are other places in europe. no matter how much progress germany makes, i would find myself recommending those instead. hey, let's stop *nazis* by putting people in prison for "baaaaaaad" video games! right, that'll help. Rolling Eyes walter, you seem rather sane, do you think they'll ever get it right over there?

I don't think money can compensate for what anyone lost to the Nazis. And, since over sixty years elapsed, I don't care about this topic about who can get money out of Germany, deserved or not.

I just find it humorous that Germany today seems to want a Jewish community to show the world (that is comprised mostly, I thought, of ex-Russian/Soviet Jews), yet it seems the feelings are different for the Jewish community that was wiped out under the Nazis.

Just as an outside observer, that doesn't have the benefit of living during the Nazi era to understand those times better, it appears to me that Germany prefers its "Jews" poor and of little real competition (the current emigrants). But woe to Jews that might have lived in Germany for a few hundred years, or more, and spoke High German and could really compete with the Teutonic Germans (those the Nazis defined as a "problem").

In other words, does Germany speak out of both sides of its mouth, so to speak on the topic of Jews? I just wonder if Germany, for the sake of the EU, and its own continued prosperity (in a modified capitalistic way), is trying very hard to do a good imitation of a progressive, diverse nation. I'm not so sure old feelings die easily amongst many of Europe's nations, including Germany. Tigers also don't lose their stripes.

of course not. the fact is they have them there, and the other fact is they have put ridiculous half-assed measures in place to prevent them from gaining power again, which limit important liberties while failing to address the real issues.

i believe you were looking for me to explain "let's stop *nazis* by putting people in prison for "baaaaaaad" video games!" - so i just did. i certainly don't think walter is a nazi Razz
