You're going to give them your DNA?

So, I do some genealogy for our family.
We're Jamestown era arrivals on my father's side and 1910 or so Irish on my mother's.

One of the sites I use to gather and trade information is now offering a Genetic Genealogy DNA test: here's what they say:
Quote:
Genetic Genealogy OverviewWhat you can learn from your DNA
You might already be familiar with how DNA testing can help solve crimes, confirm the paternity of children, and even determine the identity of ancient mummies. Now DNA can also help you with your genealogical research. It's a simple and painless process to gather your DNA sample and within a few weeks have results that you can compare with the ever-expanding DNA Ancestry database to find potential genetic cousins. Learn more about the science behind DNA, chromosomes, and genetics.
Finding genetic cousins
By comparing your DNA Ancestry test results with others, you can determine to what extent you are related. For example, the more closely your result set matches another's, the narrower the range of generations between the two of you and your common ancestor.
.

I want to do it because:
1) I thought it would be interesting
and
2) I have a sneaking suspicion (based entirely on my frustration in finding good information on any of our "crossing ancestors" on my father's side that we have more American Indian in us than we know.

Okay.

When I told some friends(also Mrs. Nation) I was going to give myself the test as a Christmas present, they were horrified. WHAT? Give your DNA to some internet outfit, !! God knows what they could do with the information!! Holy Moses, for the the Love of Mike etc etc etc etc.

What do you think?

Oh yeah, they are going to take all this data and sell it to the Insurance Companies.... AND the FBI, the CIA and the desk sargent at the local precinct (in case he has a case to solve.) will all have access to all these files.

just think of the info they'll be able to dig up for joe based on that DNA sample
hbg

reminds me of an old joke schoolboy joke .
father questions son about what he learned in school today .
son : "today we learned that our ancestors were monkeys " .
father ; "maybe your ancestor was a monkey but my ancestor certainly was not " . Laughing
good old school days !

btw i heard on some recent TV news program that DNA is not very useful in ancesteral research , because as one goes back in time , there will have been so many differents ancestors that the information is apparently not very useful .
if it doesn't cost much , it might be good just for the fun of it - if you don't mind giving up YOUR DNA - should your DNA not be destroyed after it's served its purpose ?

So, is it that you don't belive that these organizations will get a hold of your DNA data, or is it that you don't care?

I'd be more concerned with the insurance companies getting this info than the government.

I guess I don't think it (my DNA) will end up in the wrong hands.
My question is: Am I nuts to think that?

Just saw this thread start by BBB: Do you want to know how you will die?

On the side of yawn, my super eye specialist took an aliquot of my blood nigh on, urm, 15, years ago to see if my dna worked with those of hereditary retinitis pigmentosa. I suspected not, in the first place, and not, since I got a subsequent questionaire re if I had birth damage. Indeed, I sort of did.

And so what, I've no idea. But I do figure my dna is out there, square.

That was at a big league university, and no insurance so far has any clue on this, which is just as well, as I have a relatively non progressive case, to now, quite a long time later.

No flags within my major US insurance company, since I never cost them money, or, very little over the years. Alas, I now deal with medicare.
But never mind.

Perhaps a medical genius will take your DNA and use it to develop a cure for the common cold?

S/he and the drug company who proves the laboratory will make millions. You will not be compensated in any way.

From BBB's article
Quote:
A simple genetic test can predict your risk of getting cancer, heart disease or Alzheimer's.

I'm sure the insurance companies also would just love to get information on their clients' risks of getting cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's, etc.

Now read this:
My Genes....my DNA

wow.

I just want to know if there's a native american in our stream or not.
This, --tendency to gain weight-- no tendency for high blood pressure--

I don't know if I want to know all that.

You?
