Just a large manufacturing town somewhere up north to me. Isn't a Davenport some sort of sofa too? And I know a Canterbury is a magazine rack, though it seems bizarre to give it such a dignified name.

So, this leads me to ask, can anyone state authoritatively whether or not long pieces of living room furniture are referred to as davenports, because they were once manufactured in Davenport, Iowa?

I'm sure i could find this on-line with enough work, but i'm lazy, and need a shower . . .

What a fun thread!

My mother had a "rush" delivery and my first place in the world was on a Chesterfield before the EMT
gang showed up. Thanks Lord Chesterfield!!!

Never hear it in the U.S. except in a very "upscale" way or the brand of smokes lol.

Deb's picture (that's dlowan's, in case you didn't know! Laughing is what we call a Chesterfield in the UK.

As stated above, they can come in chair form as well.

The whole sofa-bed thing is new to me.

kitchenpete where have you been living? Sofabeds are essential to flat life, or any other really, do you mean youhave whole guest beds ready and waiting? Sofabeds are great! In fact i shall be sleeping on one next week in a friend's flat here in Hong Kong.
All the same, what is a davenport

I'm sorry if I confused you. I have slept on sofa-beds, futons and a number of other places which are not beds!

I meant that I'd not heard of Chesterfield as a term applied to sofa-beds. Sorry. Embarrassed

That is a term for a sofa (which does not fold out into a bed) used commonly in the New Nited States. I think the usage is fading, though. I have been told, and cannot vouch for the accuracy, that at one time a great many sofas were manufacturered in Davenport, Iowa, on the Mississippi river, and shipped all over by river boat. Can't vouch for that at all, although it makes sense . . .

I fondly remember the best Ale made in the US, was (is) a brand named Chesterfield. It was brewed by the Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville Pa. This stuff could knock any other AMerican or Canadian beer off the taste scale.

I miss it, so stop taunting me.
Its a goodam couch
Deal with it.
