Today is 2nd oct, Mahatma Gandhi's Birthday.

Has anyone seen this 8 time oscar winning film based on his life ?

I never saw it before... but yesterday when I saw it, I was surprised to see Ben Kingsley giving such a magnificent performance of his life.

Hats Off! Very Happy

The role of a lifetime for a gifted actor like Kingsley.

I believe he's from my neck of the woods.

He won the Oscar for his perfomance.

IMHO a must-see film to see before you die.
This was Kingsley's second venture onto the big screen after many years doing lots of TV stuff. He even appeared in a few episodes of Coronation Street.
Gandhi won a total of 8 Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director.
A couple of Kingsley's memorable performances can be seen as the meek accountant in Schlindler's List, and as a really scary villain in Sexy Beast (a character a million mile away from Gandhi).

I used to be a hugh Alistair McLean fan. When two of my favourite stories were made into movies I couldn't wait to see them. They were 'When Eight Bells Toll' starring a very young Anthony Hopkins and 'Fear Is The Key' with an equally young Barry Newman. He did not impress me all that much as (I thought) the film was completely 'stolen' by the cold, heartless and completely ruthless killer as played by Ben Kingsley - chilling! I never forgot him and was not surprised he won fame as such a consumate actor.

Thought he was from Salford?

Where did I get that from?

And I saw his picture in the Manchester Evening News the other night...

I glanced at it, and thought 'there's old Ben Kingsley from Greater Manchester'.

How could I have got it so wrong? There must be a connection - shall have to investigate...

But, thanks for putting me right.

Interesting site, I never knew Charles Laughton was from Scarborough as well...

I can't find a connection to Manchester - do you know what it is? Did he study drama there?

When you come out of the train station at Scarborough the pub facing you is where Charles Laughton was born, his mum and dad were publicans.

You may be right about the manchester connection perhaps it's where he studied drama

You are gonna tell me next that you didn't know that the great shakespearian actor Patrick Stewart who is most famous for his role in star trek the next generation is an Huddersfield lad or that Diana Rigg is a Doncaster lass or that Malcolm McDowell is a Leeds lad or that the late Robert Shaw was from Bolton

Just for a bit of fun smorgs click on the IMDB and check out where actors and actresses come from you will be surprised, most are from underprivelaged backgrounds, not from the west end of london
