Monitor displays "No Signal" - Please Help

Reply Fri 28 Sep, 2007 02:36 am
My monitor is showing "No Signal". I have checked the obvious things like power etc.

I've also attached a friends monitor (which I know definitely works ok) and get the same thing.

There is definitely power to the tower but I did notice that the power indicator light on the tower was a constant red instead of the usual green/red flickering showing the computer is active etc.

I'm hoping it's just the graphics card and was wondering if there is a way of testing this baring in mind that there is no display on the screen?

Would much appreciate any help on this.

Many thanks

1. If the motherboard has onboard graphics, connect the monitor cable to the appropriate socket.

2. I suppose you could substitute a known good graphics card, BUT there is the possibility that the motherboard is faulty and that it could kill the graphics card, leaving you with two dead graphics cards.

When you try to boot up the computer, do you hear any beeps?

Are you sure the computer isn't in hibernate mode ?
The power LED usually flashes on and off in that mode.
Press the power button again.
If nothing happens for half a minute press it again.

As Craven said, listen to the beeps when you switch it on. Your motherboard manual should tell you what the number of beeps means.
You can get the manual on line if you know what the make and model is.

Monitor problems, type in the problem and google it!
There is a likely chance that you have lost the driver or have in some way
damaged the driver. This happened once before to me, I had to get a new graphics driver and then i was able to view the things on the screen.
Now i am told that I need a video graphics card to go with the driver but i never got one and it's made it very difficult to do some of the functions that the graphics need to preform properly. I still try to do the best that I can and have endured the time well. Check with you computer manufacuter for updated drivers and or new releases of problems with damaged drivers that may have been updated.

If your computer is not working then use a friends to check the make, model and serial # of your computer and google search for driver downloads
of your specific model. I hope that this is what helps you. If not, most computer manufacturers have a online chat program that you can use to connect and talk to a tech. This is another way for you to get the help you need. REDS. Nvidia graphics drivers. N view a graphics driver store and mother boards, and video cards.

Or you could try to fix it the French way and drop it a few times. They fix their firearms the same way... Very Happy

Why does everybody think I'm a Frenchman? I'm a Brit who lives in Perpignan! I know it says "France" for my location, but it also says "ex-UK" in the little panel to the left of my posts. Although gaining French citizenship would make me very proud.

Fixing that computer wouldn't be difficult.

Now, had I any firearms, I would simply fix them in cjhsa's way...

I'm sure you've had plenty of practice there Franny...

As far at that computer goes, have you tried powering it down (and unplugging it) for at least 20 minutes? There is some kind of hardware failure producing that solid red light. If that doesn't work, try (again) shutting it down, unplugging, take it apart, and reseat the video card (if you aren't using the one on the main board). While you're in there, clean it with compressed air and also clean out the fan filters.

I am assuming this computer/video card actually worked at some point.

Please post your results.

cjhsa, I seem to recall that some rifles got dropped at Kasserine. I don't expect you'll be reminding us who dropped them, because like all bullies, you're a coward too.
