Is it possible that there's no place left in Noo Yawk for gefilte fish? Is this possible?

Gala says he knows a place. I gotta schlep to Baltimore for a piece of fish?

It's the end of the world as we know it.

I'm having a palpitation.

Oy vey.

Baltimore, you should only live in such a dump. At great personal risk you could come, but for a fine piece of gefilte, perhaps it's worth it? Nu?

A mensch you say. Is he married? Is he a doctor, a lawyer, dentist, an accountant?

If he's in Baltimore then it's just a hop, skip and a jump to where he needs to go.

I'm supposed to know what this is? I'm supposed to know where this is? I guess my answer, Gala, is no, I never et at Yona Shimmels. Should I have? Is there a chance I'll live long enough to get there?

It's somewhere in New York. I went years ago, had some yoghurt, a knish. A hole in the wall, but the owner was there talking with someone about the real Jake LaMotta, not Mr. Deniro.

So, why shlep to Baltimore? Don't shlep to Baltimore, it'll give you nothing but tsuris, the place is dump.

Thanks for the tip, Gala. I'll see if I can find this hole in the wall.

Oy, a Yona Shimmel knish recipe I found online: http://www.cyber-kitchen.com/rfcj/DELI/Knishes_Yona_Shimmels_-_dairy_meat_pareve.html

My father, he remembers Yona Shimmel's although he remembers calling it Yoina Shimmel's.

Gala, I had to explain to my brother what Hebonics is.

I found the site. How come they only got recipes for knishes? I'm gonna make a knish? Hah! Knishes are from delis. Everybody knows that. How come they don't have a good recipe for gefilte fish. That I could make. Wouldn't be like my grandma's, but I would give it a try.

How do I know it won't be like my grandma's? For one thing, when she bought the fish, they were swimming around in a tank. I'm gonna find such fresh fish? Doubtful.

Jes- It WAS Yoina.

Want a recipe for a nice potato kugel?

Quote:
Yoina Schimmel's Potato Kugel (Potato Pudding)
==============================================
[Yields 8 Servings]

3 lb Idaho Potatoes 1/8 tsp Pepper
4 Eggs 1/4 Cup Onion, Grated
1/3 Cup Potato Flour 1/2 Cup Butter, Melted
1 1/2 tsp Salt
3/4 tsp Baking Powder

Wash and peel the potatoes.
Coarsely grate the potatoes into a large bowl filled with ice water.
Let stand for at least 15 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Grease the inside of the (1 1/2 quart) baking dish.
Drain the potatoes.
Pat dry.
You'll need about 5 1/2 cups of grated potatoes for 8 servings,
adjust as required.

Use the large bowl of an electric mixer running at high sped to beat
the eggs until they are thick and light.

Stir in the potatoes, potato flour, salt, baking powder, pepper,
onions and half the melted butter.

Mix well.
Turn into the prepared baking dish.
Bake, uncovered, for 30 minutes.
Brush the top with melted butter.
Bake, brushing the top with melted butter every 10 minutes, until
the top is crusty and golden brown (roughly 45 minutes longer).

My brother -- who wishes everyone a Happy Purim -- remembers Shmulke Bernstein's. Shmulke's has pretty much no 'net presence, this was about the closest I could find: http://www.wherewhatwhen.com/read_articles.asp?id=87

Of course, my spelling could be less than correct.

Thanks for the link, Jes. Spelling, shmelling. It sounded right to me. The link said that the place was famous for it's hanging salamis. What deli didn't have hanging salamis? I liked the idea of the all-you-can eat pickle barrel and the yarmulked Chinese waiters. Sorry to hear this place is "defunct."
