Question

I use my computer to play online games and do a lot of researching on the net. While playing my game I just got rebooted and it said disc boot failure install system boot disc. So I installed my WIN XP Professional disk with SP2 and went through the motions like every time before but this time i got a corrupted file message while trying to reboot, and cant even get it to install so i can try to fix it. I was thinking maybe i could get into safe mood to fix it but i forget the button to push to get there and i dont even know if that would work. I am thinking i might also have to do a system reinstall or something but not quite sure on that. I am scanning the disk as i type this on another computer in the house to see if the actual disc is messed up at all. I would appreciate any help on this matter at all.

The corrupted file that i am getting is acpi.sys when I try to boot from disc.

Your hard disc or motherboard is kaput my friend. By a new one. It may be possible to resurect the data on your old hard drive when you have a new drive.

ok i just went out and bought a new hard drive and took out the old one and put the new one in just to see what would happen and when i went to install windows xp it gave me the exact same thing, im curious as to what i should do. i called up geeksquad and they want 149 right off the bat just to do diagnostics and that is out of the question. so should i call up asus and have then run a check on it since its only like a year old or something.

ty stressed and frustrated

Just googling around I notice some mention of Acpi being associated with Ram

Could be your ram or a portion of it is defunct.

I'm guessing a bit here and I think any diagnostic tech would be as well. The genreal proceedure would be to replace the hard drive and try it. If that doesnt work replace the motherboard, if that doesn't work replace the ram one stick at a time, until you find what is causing the problem.

I dont think anything wouold be achieved by starting in safe mode and turning of ACPI.sys but it might be worth a try.

Try reseating the ram into different slots.

i think you are really wrong cause i have done HDD switch, mem switch, and like 5 other things i believe it is just the CD that is corrupted or something but i dont know where to get a new one or anything, since i bought it OEM they cant send me another one unless i pay 30 dollars for it since i am a system builder.

if anyone out there can tell me where and how to download a new one that would be greatly appreciated cause this is really getting on my nerves. or maybe someone has an extra xp pro disk laying around or can burn one for me that would be awesome.

Your right I haven't got a clue. I've never even seen the inside of a computer case let alone done any diagnostic work.

I wouldnt know a ram from a mother board.

You should have spent the money getting good advice that you can trust rather than being a cheapass! If you had taken it to the shop they would have tested it and found nothing wrong with your hardware, probably loaded there own boot disk and bingo all your problems would have been solved.
