Hello, I have posted this in a new topic as i am not sure what it should come under and this is my first post. my query is in relation to making and receiving calls from my computer. is it possible using a computer with broadband connection to make and receive phone calls from mobiles and land lines (the equivalent to a house phone). do i need to use VoIP and purchase hardware as well as software. if so what are some recommendations. i hope i am making myself clear if not leave a message and i will add more detail. Much thanks to all and i hope that this helps not just me but others.
Thank you,

I use vonage and it works pretty well. Cheaper than a land line. But you should be aware when your internet goes down so will your phone. Not a big problem if you also have a cell phone.
Skype seems to be software based and uses your computer. Vonage and other VOIP use a router to attach your phone to so no software to install.
One of the other considerations in using an internent phone system is the 911 system in the US. With internet phone the 911 operator can't automatically pull up your address based on where you are calling from. Vonage allows you to register your phone number for the 911 system. I'm not sure about other VOIP or internet phone systems.
Make sure your VoIP vendor supports "e911." That's the standard that correctly forwards your 911 calls to the correct dispatcher.
Better use Skype, it's free from computer to computer and very cheap from ground line or cell phones to computer...
