Averner: "When I speak off topic I am not saddened by being ignored, but when I speak on-topic and every single post following is off-topic, it is truly disappointing!"

Take heart: it happens to all of us. I've gotten used to it.

Aperson: "Being a materialist (roughly), I have to say that consciousness is merely the accessing of memory. It is situated in the brain."

I often argue for a non-dualist position: no (material) brain=no mind.
And no (mental) consciousness=no awareness of (material) brain. The chicken and the egg evolved together, not one after another.

if you take eyes out of the equation, consciousness isn't necessarily rooted in vision.

it's actually a popular theme of fringe science/metaphysics that the brain
isn't really the locus of consciousness, more like a transceiver.
if you're interested in that sort of thing, i think you'll find lots about it.

That 's where the concept of life or spirit comes in.

Is there EVIDENCE in support of your position ?

Yes. Have you ever seen evidence of mind without brain?

Absence of evidence
is not
evidence of absence.

hehe... I've seen plenty of incidents where there is brain without mind... Smile

No brain
No mind
No me
No not-me
Only attributes working among attributes.

And this is a perspective. Evidence isn't required. The only measure of it's aptness is the measure of peace of mind and life-quality your perspective affords you. If the quest for empirical evidence is fulfilling to you, then go for it. If not, seek other paths.

Cryacuz, great to have you back!
Thanks for pointing out the importance of "perspective". I see it as both a presumptive stance (e.g., point of view) andour ability to interpretively summarize experiences, both consciously and unconsciously. Demanding "evidence" or "proof" is very important for many, if not most, issues, but too often it is used as a disingenuous weapon in dealing with philosophical interpretations (see JoefromChicago in the threat "What is Metaphysics?")
