Looks like something Bilbo Baggins ran into, doesn't it? Not made from a giant spider, but a spider cooperative. No one really knows why. Some may think it is early for Halloween, but it's just in time if the retail store's schedule is anything to go by.
BBC
I have never seen anything like that before

Too bad they didn't post a picture of what the spiders look like.
If it wasn't made by many of this species of spider, it was made by many very much like it. It's a Social Cobweb Spider.
That is really interesting.
Thanks for the pic littlek
that's really cool but I think it was frodo who ran into the spider web in the tunnel leading to mordor.
(I feel like such a D&D geek now)
No, D&D geeks don't get their fictional characters confused they way you have.
(Bilbo was in the Hobbit and had some problems with nassty spiderses.)

Thanks- I had enough trouble with my arachnophobia before this picture.
Big quarter-size spiders are always putting up webs in front of my girlfriend's house, which I invariably run into. I think they see me coming and think, "Wow. If we could just catch THAT one, we'd be set for LIFE!"
My worst nightmare is hanging off the roof of a skyscraper by my hands, and having tarantulas crawling over my fingers.

Don't be sad... Of
course I'm a bigger geek than you; I'm in Texas.
Fascinating and yet... really creepy! I had no idea they would work together like that. Hope they stay in Texas.
I think it would be neat to watch. I am not afraid of spiders, so it wouldn't bother me.

I saw the story on TV this morning. The spiders did resemble this one, I think. Teenage mutant Ninja Spiders.
