Defrag Problem

Reply Tue 5 Aug, 2003 11:17 am
When I set my computer to defrag itself last night, after 2 hours it had succeeded in makinf a 2% completein a few times, but invariably jumped back to 0% complete. When I left the house this morning I left it on defrag, but I don't think it is doing it.

If any background program makes any slight change to the hard drive Degrag will restart.

Try shutting down all programs & background processes before you start it up.

Defrag
Howdy:

You have a couple of options:

1: Use ctrl-alt-delete and "End Task" everything except Systray and Explorer.. Disable your screen saver and any power management options.. Now run scandisk and then defrag.

2: Boot into Safe Mode and run both from there. This is the recommended method.

In either case, reboot when finished to let Windows load normally.

Oh yeah, you can boot into Safe Mode by holding down F8 while starting.

Murray's the bomb.

I only see him when someone has a computer issue, and it's always with a 'howdy'.

Thanks, man.

I thank you all and I will try again in a few days. Should work if I follow your advise, I'm sure.

When shutting down all other programs, be sure to disable your anti-virus, screen saver and wallpaper!
