Placing a lien on a contractor/builder

A builder was building a house for me. He did not fix the problems in the house. I did not get the house. He stated that he would give me back my down payment in November 2005. As of to date, he has not given me back my money. How do I place a lien on his business or property?

I don't know which state you live in, but the first thing you should have done when the problems arose was to file a complaints with your state contractor licensing board. You should also file a complaint with your state's consumer protection agency.

There are time limits in taking action. Check your state's statute of limitations to learn if you still can take action. Trying to file a lien may not be the best way to try to get your money refunded.

You don't. At least not yet. First, you contact the state licensing board and file a complaint. Then you do the same with your local consumer affairs folks. If they can't help resolve your problem then you sue the business. If you sue and win and he fails to pay THEN you go to court and ask that a lien be placed on assests the business owns.
