'A Warning to My One Year Old Grandaughter'

Prepare yourself for earnest lads

who'd woo you with their words of yearning,

for fervent swains --just like their dads--

who will declare their hearts are burning,

prepare for suitors bold and shy,

who every ruse and ploy will try,

get ready dear, for love-sick guys,

who'll stir the air with their deep sighs

--no surprise,

my dear you have your mother's eyes.

Sounds a bit like Robert Burns.

Thank you FreeDuck. Thank you Miller.

This little poem started with the last line -- ie. when I realized that my grandaughter had her mom's big 'baby blues'.

It is the seventh poem I've written to or for a family member and it's a lot of fun to do so.

Poetry, as you are probably aware, has a very tiny audience in this country. A poet therfore has to take his satisfaction from the writing and could get very discouraged if he/she needs the approval of others.

On the other hand, I've found that when I write a poem to honor or acknowledge someone, the person for whom the poem is written is invariably moved and appreciative.

jjorge, it took me a while to respond to this one. My daughter just sent me a picture and I realized that she had her mother's eyes. She was standing by the bed of my son who has his father's eyes.

Wonderful poem. "no surprise"

Blue eyes run in my family.

One of my brothers has two blue-eyed youngsters .
During a visit a few years ago I wrote the following little poem for them:

'Surprise'
(for SL, age 5 and BL, age 3)

'This little poem I wrote for you,
I hope it makes you smile.

I wrote it just this morning too,
--it took just a little while.

But WHO is the 'you' I wrote it to?
Was it you?... or you?... or you?

I'll give you a clue --just one, not two:
Their eyes are blue! blue! blue!

Did you guess it, my surprise?
This poem is for TWO;

The girl and the boy with skies in their eyes
--for Sage and Ben. That's you!

Thank you Edgar!

Thank you Margo!

( jjorge thinking: hmmm.... I wrote a little poem a few years ago acknowledging Vegemite, Oz's unique ...err..'food' ... let me see...It's around here somewhere)

Funny about these blue eyed offspring in the newer generations...
...their eyes keep getting BIGGER....it must be something in the water....

BTW Margo dear,

I've heard that in a pinch you can use Vegemite in place of axle grease. Is that true?

Beautiful, jjorge.

Are you sure you wrote that warning for your grandaughter? Or, for her father? Sounds like he'll need to bar the door. Very Happy

Very perceptive. Of course all we fathers to some degree share a feeling that our daughters need to be protected from their ardent pursuers. ...I suppose we reflect on our own over-heated pursuit of young women and know what to expect. Very Happy

Somehow we (fathers that is) don't worry as much about young women conniving after our sons.
(we always underestimate women!)

Fortunately our sons have mothers, and they know how the game is played by the other side.

PS Thanks for your kind words re the poem Squinney.

jjorge - how unkind you are about Vegemite - it may look a bit like axle grease (and have roughly the correct consistency!) but it's built generations of bonny little Australians! (except dlowan!). I'm not sure it's ever been substituted - but it'd certainly be worth a try in a critical situation! Cool

I'm off to have cheese and Vegemite on toast for breakfast!

Well - I enjoy it. A couple of years ago, when I was living in a cave, it was almost my only home meal - cooking facilities were very limited Cool

Margo,

I was going to try it once...until I learned that it was:

"... a greenish brown paste made from finely ground vegetables...and termites.......hence: "veg - e - mite" Rolling Eyes
