" When I state myself as the representative of the verse, it does not mean me, but a 'supposed person'. "
-Emily Dickinson (Letters)
'Faith Etc.'
Now, there are some --the doubters and the flouters-- who regard the
likelihood of being born again with so much mirth,
(but they won't chuckle when the rapture comes and they're
left standing, blinking, on a smoking chunk of earth!)
but I digress, renascimento's what I'm really pondering,
not those someday sorry souls of lesser worth--
you see my preacher says you can be born again, 'Kinda gradual-like',
that it's not always 'All at once' with lots of halleluias, cryin' and grinnin',
He says sometimes it can happen so darn slow that you don't even know
that you've been saved, so you might just keep on enjoyin' sinnin',
until it catches up with you and one day as you're walkin' out the door
you say: "Oh! I get it! I've been saved! I guess I won't be sinnin' anymore."
Anyway, I was thinkin', "Lord, if you're gonna have me born again,
and for awhile I'll have to hang around with all the sinners here on Earth,
Can't you help me twice, and do something nice about my excess girth?"
