Have you read 'Black Vinyl, White Powder'? You should, it's interesting. All about the history of drugs and it's role in music, past and present. Gives 'Hound Dog' as an example of a song recorded over decades by various artists on all kinds of drugs. We all know Elvis liked a toke... need I say more?
