Cheap D/T computers:ACER ASPIRE-are they any good?

I need to find out if the ACER ASPIRE desktop computers M1600 & SA90 are any good. At the moment they are the cheapest d/t computer I know of, selling for around $700/$800AU ("after cash back") BUT when I enquire at the computer store advertising them, the staff tell me that they are "no good" and then try to sell me another brand, several hundred dollars dearer. I am confused.
As always, I will be grateful for any advise.
Vonda.

I own an Aspire 5000 (I am not familiar with other models), it's a couple years old. I think it's a good basic computer. But, I have had some issues. I had to send it back for service when I'd had it only 4-5 months and they wiped the hard drive (not needed according to the techies I know). It took more than 2 weeks to get the laptop back. I often have issues with the general running of the machine as well. I gets sticky sometimes.

So, I guess it depends on what you want to use it for and how much better the newer models have become.
