Pop up window---"The installer you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete. Result of damaged disc, failed download or a virus. You may want to contact the author of this installer to obtain a new copy."

I don't know what the pop-up is referring to. I use Norton Virus check.

First, its a very bad idea to post an eMail address you care anything about on a public web forum; 'bots crawl the web looking for eMail addresses to add to spam mailing lists. You might wanna click the http://www.able2know.com/forums/templates/Able2Know/images/icon_report.gif button at the top right of your post and request the address be removed from your post.

Also, it would be helpful to know what Operating System you are running - and whatever Operating System you're using, it should be fully patched and updated - and the name and version of any security/privacy software you are running - antivirus, antispyware, adblocking, popup blocking, etc. - all of which should be current an fully updated as well.

That said, lets look at the problem you report.

You are getting that error message due to failure of Nullsoft Scriptable Install System. NSIS is a commonly used method of implementing installation of downloaded applications. What the message means is that something you've downloaded (intentionally or otherwise) is trying to install but files required to effect installation are missing or corrupt.

Quite typically, this error is associated with ineptly written yuckware piggybacked with p2p shared files. A common cause for the message is that your antivirus or antiyuckware recognized and deleted, quarantined, blocked, or otherwise intercepted and disabled a potentially unwanted application, but the registry entry calling for installation remains in place and Windows cannot find the called-for files.

Resolving the issue can be as simple as locating and deleting the last item you downloaded and tried to instal, or it can - often is - a lot trickier. If option A - finding and removing the failed install - doesn't get you where you wanna be, I recommend:

  • Additionally, and again with any resident security/privacy software disabled, once you have completed at least 2 of the online virus scans, run at least one of the following free online anti-yuckware scans (nothing wrong with running both; what one misses, another may pick up)

IMPORTANT: DISABLE ANY OTHER ANTIVIRUS YOU MAY HAVE ON YOUR MACHINE BEFORE RUNNING ANY OF THE ONLINE SCANS. Also, if you have any popup blocking, adblocking, or actively running antispyware application, disable those as well; they can interfere with online virus scans.

  • Download, install, and update Ad-Aware SE Personal. Just install and update it (when the program has installed, click the blue-green "Planet" icon, second from the right at the top of the screen, to run the auto-update function, and follow the prompts to update the application); don't run a scan yet.

When it has updated, click on the orange-ish "Gear Icon" (second-from the left at the top right-hand side of the window) to open the Ad-Aware configuration utility.
    • Under the "General" tab, all radio buttons should be green; if not, click to activate them.
    • Click the "Scanning" bar at the left of the page. Under "Drivers, Folders & Files", only the "Scan within archives" button should be green. Under "Memory & Registry", all buttons should be green.
    • Click the "Advanced" bar. Under "Shell Integration", "Move deleted files to Recycle Bin" should be green, and its your call whether you want to add "Scan with Ad-Aware to Explorer".
    • Under "Logfile Detail Level", all 3 buttons should be green.
    • Under "Alternate Data Streams", both buttons should be red.
    • Skip the "Startup", "Default", and "Interface" bars for now.
    • Click the "Tweak" bar. Click the plus-sign to open "Scanning Engine". "Unload recognized processes ... ", "Obtain command line ... ", and ""Scan registry for all users ... " should be green, "Run scan as background ...", "Ignore spanned files ...", and "Use permanent ... " may be left red.
    • Click to open "Cleaning Engine". The first 5 buttons should be green ("Automatically check ...", "Always try ...", "During removal ... ", "Let Windows remove ... ", and "Delete quarantined ...") should be green, the remaining 3 ("Suppress warning ...", "Suppress progress ..." and "Disable manual ...") should be red.
    • Skip the remaining bars, click "Proceed", then close Ad-Aware WITHOUT RUNNING A SCAN.

  • Download, install, and update Spybot S&D.
  • READ THE TUTORIAL
  • Just install and update it (when it installs, the program will give you the option to "Download all updates" and to set a Restore Point - let it do so).
    • When the program has been installed and updated, select "Immunize", click the green "+" plus-sign symbol at the top of the page to install Spybot's immunization, and follow any prompts.
    • On that same page, click to place a checkmark in the "Browser Helper to block bad downloads ... " button, then, from the dropdown below that, select "Block all bad pages silently".
    • DO NOT turn on Spybot S&D's "TeaTimer" feature
    • While you have Spybot open it would be a good time to read the tutorial available under the Help file at the top left-hand corner of the page. When done, just close the application WITHOUT RUNNING A SCAN.

When you have completed the online scans and the downloads, installations, updates and configurations, run:

  1. A full system scan with Ad-Aware SE, letting it fix anything it finds. If it asks to reboot to finish a repair, do so.
  2. A full system scan with Spybot S&D. Let it fix anything it reports in RED - items reported in GREEN are not critical - fix or don't as you prefer. If it asks to reboot to finish a repair, do so.
  3. A full system scan with SuperAntiSpyware. Let it fix anything it finds.
  4. Finish with one more run of Cleanup, rebooting when prompted.

If - AND ONLY IF - AFTER COMPLETING THE ABOVE you still have the problem (unlikely, but could happen), download HiJackThis, and extract it to a folder of its own either in your Programs file or directly on your root drive.
  • If you have already installed HiJackThis, be certain its in its own folder and not a temporary or desktop folder (to place HJT in its own folder, open Windows Explorer - Windows key + E - locate and select your root drive, the drive on which Windows is installed, and open that folder, right-clicking anywhere in that folder's blank space, select "New">"Folder", name the new folder "HJT", then download and extract, or if you already have the latest version somewhere else move, HJT into that folder).
  • Launch the application, then, from its splash screen, choose "Miscellaneous Tools", or from the main start page, select "Config", then select "Search for updates online", confirm, and be sure your's is the latest version.
  • When you are sure HJT is properly located and updated, close it, then re-open it.

When running HiJackThis to scan or fix things, run it from its own folder, WITH NO OTHER BROWSERS, WINDOWS, FILESHARING, EMAIL, OR MESSAGING APPLICATIONS OPEN OR RUNNING.

  • With only HJT open and running, select "Do A System Scan and Save a Logfile".
  • When the scan has completed, copy-and-paste the entire logfile to this thread.
  • Do not "FIX" anything yet; wait for specific instructions.
