Seth Brundle from the Fly

What kind of scientist would Seth Brundle have been from The Fly(1986).

He engineered the transport machine. He probably has an engineering degree of sorts. Wikipedia doesn't give any further clarifying notes.

I'm in the process of making a IMDb poll suggestionon Jeff Goldblumand his role as scientists.

Also, he played a recruiter in the true story, Right Stuff. Would that have been a military recruiter or someone with a science background working for NASA?

I would think he'd be a physicist learned in quantum physics since that would seem to be the path to a teleportation device.
