@edgarblythe,
I saw that this morning, was going to start a thread later and forgot.
This is the one I read this morning -
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/mike-nichols-dead-hollywood-mourns-750695

I used to love Nichols and May.. and that was just early on, so much other good work he did.

Now I'm reading the comments on that in the Reporter. Sigh.
Worth a look, they are.

In 1968 he won the Academy Award for Best Director for the film The Graduate. His other films include Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Catch-22, Carnal Knowledge, Silkwood, Working Girl, The Birdcage, Closer, Charlie Wilson's War (his final picture), and the TV mini-series Angels in America. He also staged the original theatrical productions of Barefoot in the Park, Luv, The Odd Couple and Spamalot.
Nichols was one of a small group of people who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award. His other honors included the Lincoln Center Gala Tribute in 1999, the National Medal of Arts in 2001,[1] the Kennedy Center Honors in 2003 and the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2010. His films garnered a total of 42 Oscar nominations and seven awards.

@edgarblythe,
An amazing talent.

I've been listening to tributes on the CBC on and off all day.

Some of the old Nichols and May routines still crack me up decades after first hearing them.

I love a number of his movies. Especially The Graduate and Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf? The only one I did not really like is Carnal Knowledge. I like Catch-22, but feel it did not capture the full flavor of the novel.

@ehBeth,
I remember them from shows like Ed Sullivan. I had forgotten Elaine in the years since they did those.

I knew him through Nichols and May, which was top shelf. Did not even know that he directed, but I like a lot of those movies. I am reading that he was not into the celeb thing, that his interests were the good life and making good art. I gotta love and respect that.

If he had died around 1970 it would have been a huge deal. But not that many people remember or ever knew of Nichols and May, and while this guy continued to do fantastic art he mostly did it out of the public eye. He has been essentially gone for 40 years

I don't think he will forgotten, exactly. When they make up lists of great - whatever the category - his name will appear.

@hawkeye10,
If you read the article I linked in the Hollywood Reporter, a 'magazine' I well remember, there are many comments from present day celebs who admire him a lot. The Reporter is one of two major hollywood news sources over a lot of decades; still is now.

His death is still a 'huge deal'.

@edgarblythe,
The young/younger comedians and actors who are being interviewed about his effect on the industry today are still overwhelmed by the range of his talent.

He is said to have had perfect timing for comedy and drama. People still got excited about getting calls from him to talk about new projects.

IN the industry. The average Joe Sixpack has never heard of him.
