Please help me get rid of offeroptimizer!

Reply Mon 10 May, 2004 02:15 pm
I don't know how the heck I got this xlime offeroptimizer slimeware when I did not download anything. I have been trying to get rid of this horrible thing with no success, but I'm just an amateur. It has slowed down my internet terribly and pops appear randomly (even when only outlook is open). Thanks to this site I have better understanding of what this is, as other people have unfortunately learned the hard way as well. I downloaded Hijack this so I could post the log file.

Can someone please tell me what is safe to remove ??? I have got to end this nightmare!!! It maybe easiest to copy and highlight the bad stuff. I will be deeply greatful for your help!

Shocked Confused Sad Very Happy

Here is the log file:

Jennifer, My computer was also hijacked by that offeroptimizer. The way I got rid of it by using SYSTEM RESTORE. If you have windows XP, just go to PROGRAMS, go to ACCESSORIES, go to SYSTEM TOOLS, go to SYSTEM RESTORE, then go to a date when your computer was free of this program. That should get rid of it.

Thanks! AdAware and Spybot did the trick! Timberlandko's post was very helpful too. Thanks!!! Although the firewall was disabled at the time I got infiltrated, is there any other software I can keep running on my system in addition to a firewall and anti-virus to protect it, or is that all I need?

To protect your system:

1) Run windows updates.

2) Keep a good AV program (I recommend Norton and only Norton) with updated definitions.

3) A firewall is extra protection.

Other than that, there are a lot of small things you can do, some are behavioral (e.g. caution with attachments in email) but those are the big ones.
