I was reading another topic and saw people asking if there was a "best year". I quess there are 2 schools of thought on that, some say 1939 and others 1962, the films of 1939;
"STAGE COACH'
"WUTHERING HEIGHTS"
"GOODBYE MR. CHIPS"
"THE WIZARD OF OZ'"
"MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON'"
"GONE WITH THE WIND"
"NINOTCHKA"
"YOUNG MR. LINCOLN"
"THE WOMEN"
among others, the films of 1962;
"THE MUSIC MAN"
"LAWRENCE OF ARABIA"
"THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE"
"GYPSY"
"DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES"
"LOLITA"
"THE MIRACLE WORKER"
"THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE'
"DAVID AND LISA"
"MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY"
"LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD"
"JULES ET JIM"
"SHOOT THE PIANO PLAYER"
"THE BIRD MAN OF ALCATRAZ"
"ELECTRA"
"TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD"
and others.
Any opinions????
I just know that's it got to be at least 30 years before now. These days Hollywood is churning out mindless trash as if from a production line.
There has been "mindless trash" turned out of Hollywood since day one of the movies. The older films (usually referred to as "B" movies) are likely unavailable as the prints weren't taken care of and/or the negatives lost. Today, it's a slicker, special effects laden, bathroom humor comedy, teeny bopper triviality -- you name it. The old trash may even seem good because of the nostalgia. Anyone remember the endless run of schlocky science fiction monster movies in the 50's?
1994 wasn't the best year, but it was a good one:
Forrest Gump
Pulp Fiction
Shawshank Redemption
The Lion King
Natural Born Killer's
Heavenly Creatures
truth
I have been convinced that Mystic River is the best film of many years, but today I finally saw Monster. I don't know if the film surpasses that of MR, but every character was perfect and Theron's acting (and makeup) has me stunned. She should defintely get the Academy Award for leading actress.
Sorry, I just realized I'm off the topic.
Any year with Blow Up in it was a good year.
