Kenneth Mars, an actor best known for his over-the-top performance as a German playwright in the original movie version of “The Producers,” died on Saturday at his home here. He was 75.

Sad news indeed. Kenneth (sometimes Kenny) Mars was famous for his roles in the Mel Brooks movies The Producers and Young Frankenstein, as well as a recurring role in the TV show Malcolm in the Middle. He played deranged Germans so often that it was easy to forget that he was born in Chicago.

@joefromchicago,
Kenneth Mars was also a regular on "He and She" a sitcom with Richard Benjamin and Paula Prentiss.

Mars was hilarious as the German playwright in The Producers. Dustin Hoffman originally wanted to play that part for Mel Brooks, but then won a part opposite Anne Bancroft (the wife of Mel Brooks) in The Graduate.

@joefromchicago,
I didn't recognize the name, but after checking out this thread, I certainly remember him!
He was Franz Liebkind, the author of Spring Time for Hilter! Very Happy
What a magnificent, outrageously hilarious performance that was.
Unforgettable.
If he didn't receive some award for that performance, he should have.
Sad to hear of his death.
