The problem with films, unless they are documentaries, are that they are fiction. A writer writes with a specific point of view, He embellishes the story so that it will have the most impact on audiences. Therefore, a story that might be based in fact, usually becomes very distorted when put into a film.

You would be much better off reading books on the subject. History is not my "thing", but there are those on A2K who could probably point you to some good references.

That is a very rich source for movie plots.

Just some examples off the top of my head:

Lost in Translation
Gung Ho
The Quiet Man
Stroszek
The Sand Pebbles
Coming to America
The Magnificent Seven
Flower Drum Song
Sayonara
Goodbye Lenin
Moscow on the Hudson

HBO did a movie based on Dee Browns "Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee". The book was panned by historians (mostly out of a sense of incredulousness about what really went on with the AMerican Indian during the time after the Civil War).

The book was popular among readers and, today, much of Browns resources are being recognized via tribal and other verbal history.
