This is actually kind of a cool gadget. You know those gadgets where you have to click what countries (or in the US, states) you've been in, and then it creates a world map with all those in red? Which doesnt really say much, because one visit to St Petersburg will draw the map red to Vladivostok? Well, this is not that.

TripAdvisor - Make your own travel map

What it is, is something that takes far more time to make. Smile But it's also more fun. Specially if you're enough of a geek. In fact, I've wanted to make a map like this ever since I was a geeky kid, and now there's this gadget!

You type in the name of the cities, towns and national parks you have been to, and it gradually covers the map with pins accordingly. (If you're not exactly sure of the place name but you know how it starts, just start typing and it will show you the cities that start like that.)

If you zoom in, the available choices of towns for your current selection also appear in a menu on the right. And it's pretty effing detailed - in Holland, for example, they've got the smallest towns and the most boring suburbs. Choices get narrower the unlikelier the destination, but there were only a few places I've been that I couldn't find back, like Hrvatska Kostajnica, Croatia; Bvumba, Zimbabwe; or Bergen in the Netherlands (but they did have Bergen-on-Sea).

Anyway, if you're really just kinda at your tax and you just need to break a coupla hours and space out -- like I did -- then if you're geeky enough this is a pretty cool way to do it. You can put up as many or as few locations as you want, of course, depending on how detailed you want the map to be. You do have to register though.

Here's my map - or at least the section of it that's relevant, cause I've never been in Asia, Latin-America or Australia:

Ok, anyone want to place bets on the number of pins on c.i.'s map?

This is cool, nimh. I have one of those other map gadgets you described on my website to show all the countries I've visited. Doing it this way will be fun too. I'll also get to revisit all those trips while I try to remember all the cities we went to.

This is terrible, now I'll have to divide my time between my new hobby, tagging on a2k, and making my very own travel map.

Seriously, though, thanks.

LOL Osso Very Happy

Glad y'all thought it of interest!

I should get my family to do this... my map would be by far the least impressive if you'd see my sister's and my father's next to it.. or my mother's, if one of us would recreate one for her.

Nice one! I see we both focus on the heartland of Europe and by & large skip the Hispanic, Celtic, Scandinavian and formerly-Soviet fringes ;-)

Yeah I was in America - wrote about it here too some time, I think when Massagato/Italgato/etc was telling me I hated America and everything it stood for. Travelled from East to West in '88 with my dad, who lived there for a year after high school (with a socialist reverend, if you'll believe it).

That's a cool thread....

I did make a map, somewhere, at some point, with some other tool. Have to find it...

Exactly! The heartland of Europe is still more desirable. Scandinavian countries are too cold in the winter, and in the summer months you're eaten
alive by all the bugs. Former Soviet countries are too depressing, I didn't want to spend my vacation time this way (still don't).Hungary was the only eastern country at that time I had visited and I loved Budapest!

Okay, I missed where you talked about your U.S. stay.

Post the URL of your picture using the img BBCode tags like this:

Code:[img]http://your.picture.here[/img]

You can get the BBCode Toolbar by clicking the little green "Open BBCode Editor" link, or you enter the whole thingamajiggie manually...

Thanks, I know that. What I can't do is get the Img of the map on the trip advisor page.

Oh, sorry.

Do a screenshot, then upload it somewhere?

(I didn't really go the trip advisor website, though....)

If you have a MAC you just press command+shift+4 at the same time and
can make a screen shot. I don't know how it works with a PC.
