When has religion irked you personally and why?

Well, Nobody's home again. I've been away for five or six days, and upon returning I am amazed to see the amount of work expended on this--and "the nature of human rights"--thread. In both cases I've been often impressed with the imaginative thought demonstrated. But in THIS thread, I've been particularly impressed by the degree of masochism we as a group have revealled in "coping" with the very narcissistic Maliagar. He has used us to gratify his or her apparently insatiable apetite for attention. We have taken his abuse and pounded on him collectively, and he has taken strength from it--because it has been ATTENTION.

Yes, and now the paranoia sets in -- hope his faith will prevent his illusion that "the crowd" has set upon him as if he wasn't asking for it. As if somone is unable to read the forum new postings annunciators, he believes he's being followed and that every thread he presents himself is "being hijacked" by "the crowd." No mention of hijacking threads and attempting to divert attention from a subject he has no argument for to offer his spin on his personal religious views. I wonder if this is part of his weekly confession? If he's informed his priest what he is doing in a public forum I can only guess what the reaction would be.

"Join the Gospel Express,
Come along and say yes.
It's leaving for glory soon,
And the guard is so glad,
He is waving his flag.
Hallelujah it won't be very long.
Beep, beep, beep goes the whistle.
Toot, toot, toot goes the train.
Chug, chug, chug goes the engine.
And we're off on the glory train."

When does it arrive?

Well, this will just feed his Christ complex even more. If he sticks around long enough, he'll claim he is being crucified, not just persecuted, and may even develop stigmata. That stigmata really gums up a keyboard...

Okay - this is a good time to repeat something I said early on regarding Maliagar.

I certainly do not want to see him leave A2K.

We need someone here who knows lots about Catholic teachings - and he is knowledgeable.

The fact that he is a boor should not detract from that - or cause us to forget the desirability of having someone with that kind of knowledge on site.

Over at Abuzz we could always count on Martin Fricke, Father John Garvey, or Monsignor Hettinger to provide expertise. We don't have those guys here - and someone is needed.

And diversity of opinion is a good thing.

So despite the considerable and deeply felt differences we may have with Maliagar, let's all keep that in mind.

I recognize the need for someone like maliagar on A2K. I just wish he would cut out the name-calling and drama, and simply share his particular knowledge in a proper manner. That is all. It's not what he stands for that bothers people, it's the smug way he puts it.

RIGHT, Cav. It's his manner that I find difficult. Most often, I must confess (no pun intended), I could not read his statements to the end. His boorishness is intended. I suspect he's not at all like that with his friends. He used it as an assault tool. Who needs it? Frank, I suspect you want him to stay because he justifies your aggression.

When i was a child, as a part of the system, we were obliged to take canned goods to the "Sisters of Charity" because of their vow of poverty and to show just how much we were just insanely in love with Jesus and all his "brides." It used to really frost my nuts--my grandparents operated a truck garden, in every sense of the term, except that we did not sell it, we used it to feed ourselves and gave away a good deal of the rest to relations and the less well-off in town. I worked my ass off in that garden--i had a grudge against the Mistresses of Pain in the first place, and the thought that they would be eating those green beans i had sweated over was just too much for me. They never once got any of the cucumbers which i grew, and those were grown to win prizes, which they always did--and usually the first prize. I'd have mashed them all into the compost heap before i'd have let those bitches get one of my lovingly-tended beauties.

Ah well, I signed up for the sisters of Notre Dame, but luckily rethought the matter, and gradually rethought my way out the door.

I am with Cav in not really wanting to argue about it; he never believed, I feel like I never believed, it has been so long. But I don't mind watching others argue well, as I used to be interested in theological inquiry.

Strutting and reciting on any side aren't very interesting to me. Not that I am a good debater myself, I am not. I figure I will know it when I see it, good debating, that is. Where is Hans Kung now that we need him?

Setanta, the Virgin of Perpetual Misery will pull your feet when you are asleep tonight. Don't let it frighten you; she does it to me all the time.

Maybe if the Virgin just got it over with she wouldn't be so miserable...

JL, in fact, i don't sleep at night for just that reason . . . she's made of me an insomniac--i sit up nights with my shotgun . . . so far, she's dodged the bullet, or, rather, the buck shot . . .
