Congratulations, Setanta, you've driven Jack (eltajano) out. He was a decent fellow, too. You'll probably say it was his "weakness" or some such thing that made him leave. I'm sure you'll rationalize it for the rest of us. Way to go.

And you wonder why you are getting so much grief.

Actually, I wonder why so many apparent atheists or agnostics spend so much time on a "spirituality & religion" forum. And don't tell me its an altruistic desire to lead others to the truth. I don't buy it. I think some here just love to argue for the sake of arguing, and they derive a sense of superiority from trying to prove that theists are wrong.

Just as you derive a sense of superiority from telling people you have experienced something they haven't...

You don't know that. I've never criticize anyone for what they have or have not experienced. However, I have been viciously criticized just for relating my experiences and giving my interpretation of what they signify. See the difference?

Anybody want to discuss whether or not the followers of one god are exactly the same as any other and that's it's inevitable that at some point in time they will try to wipe us all out rather than face the reality that there is no god to follow.

Yeah, right, lets change the subject rather than deal with the unpleasant realization that some in our midst are being mean and rude. Furthermore, lets take any opportunity to lump all theists in with murderous fanatics so that we can propagate an angry, paranoid view of anyone who actually attempts to take seriously all that religious crap.

IFF acccurately points-out:

In fact, what you have done is to create a hostile environment where many potential contributors are probably reluctant to post.

I know nobody gives, as Setanta himself might say, a rat's ass whether I post here or not - but the truth his that this man is so mean, viscious and hypercritical that I don't believe I care to participate here any more. He hates my guts, he's "out to get me", and everything I say will be not just corrected, but ridiculed without mercy. It' feels like a classroom where you don't dare ask a question because the teacher will hold you up in front of the class as an example of stupidity.

I tried everything I could think of to establish some sort of working relationship with this man, I have repeatedly held-out olive branches but all to no avail. He has despised me since my first post! He never even gave me a chance! I asked Joe Nation my first day here if I was intruding on a private club and he, probably sincerely, assured me I was not. But it is a private club, more of gang really, presided over by an egotistical thug who maintains leadership authority over a cadre of adoring followers by slapping around people like IFF and me. He may be an intellectual giant, but he's utterly ignorant when it comes to manners or social graces.

There are some real nice people here - TKO, Joe N, Neologist, Rosborne, Mesquite - in fact, they are all nice people except for that one individual. I was not only enjoying discussing things with them, I was learning and growing intellectually too. But life's too short to put-up with a jerk like that. If it was in the workplace I'd have to tolerate his abusive ways. But this recreactional activity has ceased to be fun. He's ruining your forum and the moderator should shut him off.

I won't be back. It was fun while it lasted. Bye

Jack

IFF - Here's some unsolicited advice from someone who's been there...

The best you can do is to open up a thread and ask that members abide by guidelines such as "if you don't believe in any god or spirituality, please don't disrupt the discussion". Some won't, but some will. And when they come to deride, just ignore them - you won't gain anything by engaging them, and if you can just let them slide off your back, you still might get some exchanges going with people who have similar interests.

Yes, lets make fun of people we insult and treat rudely. Isn't this fun?

I was crying with mortification, when I said that. (I made the same suggestion as snood, earlier).

Thank you for your advice. I'll consider it. I've been posting on various forums from time to time for years. However, this is the first time that I actually felt a bit angry about what I observed. (Clear evidence that I'm not enlightened!)

Prior to that, I had not treated anyone rudely. It irritates me to see someone act so childishly as that.

Fair enough, but your joking comes across as an attempt to "kick someone when they're down". And you think its childish to speak out about the meanness and rudeness of certain people here? Or that he left to find a site where there was civil conversation?

I think you are being childish yourself. Can't get the upper hand in the discussion, turn it into a bitch fest.

It wasn't me that started the mean-spirited attacks. You should know that. Sometimes we have to speak up when others are behaving inappropriately.

As far as I know the idea of "kicking someone then they're down" is based on the christian-judaic ethic of encouraging the down-trodden (and the queers) to get the moxie to stand on their own two feet and fly right. I might be wrong, I'm not of the christian-judaic ethic. I'm an ordinary pagan with mojo working and a black cat bone.

I once heard a buddhist philosopher speak that "all gods whisper, in order to hear them you must be very quiet."

Pardon me, partner, but THAT is the subject of this thread, not whether someone got their feelings hurt or somebody won't play nicely with others.

As for fanatics, which ones? Ours or theirs? Gen. Boykin, who famously believed the war against Islamists would be won because he knew that "my God was bigger than his. I knew that my God was a real God and his was an idol." ?

Or should we be listening more closely to James Dobsen who said concerning Democratic Senator Pat Leahy that he wasn't sure if Leahy hated God, but he was certain that he "hated God's people." ? (That is the same Sen. Leahy who our esteemed Vice-President Cheney told to go '**** himself." That kind of rudeness, oh my, on the same day that the Senate passed the "Defense of Decency Act" by a vote of 99 to one." Apparently mean things can be said nearly anybody anywhere in the defense of Family Values.

And, I think Jack has given us a perfect example of the kind of backdown in the face of criticism which personifies the American believer. He talked about how he thought, after years of having almost all of Mosaic Law written into our legal system, (yipes) now Christianity and our whole way of life was under attack, churches being closed, no prayers before football games (oh, the horror).

That's the kind of thinking that leads the voters in Kansas to elect people who don't know much about running a government but who do stand firm on Evolution and Gay Marriage. (I would say our current administration in Washington suffers from a nationwide push from the cultural (and cultish ) Right wing of the Republican party. Just look at the devastation these dolts have brought upon the Department of Justice!

I shudder to think who they have brought into the Department of Homeland Security. Let's hope it's not some of our fanatics who believe that the Apocalypse IS now and that a flaming chaotic Middle East is a good thing because Jesus will appear on that shining cloud any day now.

You want us to take you seriously because you take your religious beliefs seriously?? Fine. Now consider seriously what the implications are of those beliefs in a real world.

Joe(please keep your hands where we can see them)Nation
