Are you a 1-3 or a 2-4?

I heard a talk show host this morning make a hilarious confession about the question he asked his wife before asking her to marry him. "Are you a 1-3 or a 2-4?"

The guy used to play in a band, is music mad, rhythm crazy, is fascinated by the fact that some people without thinking will tap their feet or nod or clap their hands on the first and third beats, others on the second and fourth. He believes (I concur, being a fellow 2-4), that 2-4's are groovier. (His wife is a 1-3; he has forgiven her... sort of...)

well, that's gonna depend to a certain degree on the music, ain't it?

oddly enough, i find this: when i play the piano i'm more inclined to be a 2-4; when i play the guitar i'm more inclined to be a 1-3.

whattaya makea that?

I have no idea. Maybe I'll ask someone who knows how to count beats to tell me.

This was the subject of a discussion with a friend during a long drive to a golf tournament a few years ago. I said something about the backbeat to a tune. She said, hunnnnnnnnnnnnh? A long discussion followed. O.k., so I did a bit of a monologue for a bit.

I am a backbeat person, 2/4, all the way.
She was clearly not. 1/3. That's all she knew. Good luck with those music lessons was my thought.

I don't even want to remember our discussion about the downbeat. Rolling Eyes

INTERESTING.

I haven't heard a discussion of the 'downbeat' or 1-3 time, 2-4 time since I studied piano as a weener and teener.

Most people are whatever tune has attached to their head-- mostly.

LOVE songs 2-4 , that is the groove I'm in.

I'm pretty sure I'm a 2-4, but I remember when I was singing in a group and we were doing some gospel song. The leader kept fussing with me because I was clapping at the wrong time. "Don't you have any soul?" were, I think, his words... and this was in a church! Finally, he just asked me not to clap. Does that make me a zero?

I know, give me a song to listen to and I'll tell you when I clap. Then you all can tell me whether I'm a 1-3 or a 2-4. What do you say?

I'm inclined to clap when the majority does not. So I guess I'm a 2/4? I had no idea there was a category of people with this propensity. I just thought it was yet another of my eccentricities.

As a jazz lover, it is always 2-4. I guess if you are a John Phillip Sousa kind of listener, 1-3 makes sense.

Dys, I'm worried about you. Your sense of rhythm might need some work. I'll give you some lessons the next time I'm in CO.

I was always told you weren't supposed to clap until they were done. Next time I'm at the BSO I'm gonna clap all the way through.
