Brazilian poet Marly de Oliveira dies

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) -- Marly de Oliveira, the Brazilian poet who wrote the award-winning volume "O Mar de Permeio," or "The Sea Between Us," died Friday in Rio de Janeiro. She was 69.

Oliveira died of multiple organ failure after being hospitalized for four months, the Brazilian Academy of Letters said Saturday on its Web site.

The widow of renowned poet Joao Cabral de Melo Neto, Oliveira was elected to the academy and won the Jabuti prize in 1998 for "O Mar de Permeio," a collection of poems about anguish and emptiness.

Oliveira, a professor of Hispanic and Italian literature, wrote seven other volumes of poetry among other works in a career spanning more than 40 years, the academy said.

She will be buried in the academy's mausoleum in Rio. She is survived by two daughters.
