According to an article in Scientific American, a popular-science magazine, 90% of the general population surveyed professed a distinct belief in a personal god and afterlife, while only 40% of the scientists with a Bachelor of Science degree surveyed did so, and only 10% of those considered "eminent."

Why is this?

What does it mean?

Is this why religion attacks science (evolution vs. creationism)?

Is this a phenomenon that we will see progress?

Better educated people are more rational... To learn anything of a complex nature, one must learn the logic of it... The simple and irrational nature of religion rejects logic, and is learned by repetition...

Would this be the same as brainwashing? If so, more people would have to realize that repetitive teachings every single day is detrimental to children, who would be unable to understand that there is, logic.

@auroreII,
Carse (The Religious Case Against Belief) said something to the effect that believers enjoy more certainty than do knowers
