Austria Voting Age Lowered to 16
By AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE
Austrians will be able to vote in all elections from the tender age of 16 under a new law. The new voting age, the lowest in the European Union, is one of several changes promised by the coalition of social democrats and conservatives that took power in January. The minimum age to stand for election has also been lowered to 18, except for presidential candidates, who must be at least 35 years old. The changes are expected to be approved by Parliament before the summer.
In Germany it is still 18, but 16 for municipal elections in the states of Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony-Anhalt, Berlin and Schleswig-Holstein.
In my state (North Rhine-Westphalia) 16 on state level was rejected by the governing conservative-liberal [liberalist] government.
The minimum age to stand for election in Germany is for all elections 18 = being of age, since more than 30 years.
