How on earth can anyone be on top of a list and on the bottom as well?

America gave $22.7 billion in aid in 2006, more than any other of the 22 rich countries measured that year. The next biggest, Britain, donated just over half that sum. The small Nordic countries donated much less: Norway gave $2.9 billion, for example. However, measuring aid as a percentage of GDP, the picture looks quite different. On this score, America is the least generous nation, contributing only 0.17% of GDP, while Norway's smaller sum represents 0.89%. Sweden tops the table, giving over 1%.

Sweden has a small number of people, but they are very generous.
The USA has a large number of people, who donate just a little each.
But because there are so MANY stingy people in the US, it's still adds up to a lot more than tiny Sweden can scrape together.

The USA has 286 million people who produce $13,220 billion a year, about $46,153 per person.
Sweden has only 9 million people who produce $371 billion a year, about $41,222 per person.
So, Swedish and American people earn about the same amount of money.
Neither one is poverty stricken. $41,000 a year is a pretty good income.

However, each American donates about $79 for aid (0.17% of their income), totalling $22.7 billion,
while each Swede donates $444 for aid (1.08% of their income), totalling $4.0 billion.
So, each Swedish person is about six times more generous than an American.

There are not a lot of Swede's though, so even though they try harder and give more,
their total donation is still less than the huge country of America.
9 million people donating $444 each is still less than
286 million people donating $79 each.

Does that make sense, or too many numbers?
