Now...eat a mandarin.

Is it sweet enough!

If not - get out there - invite your friends over for a mandarin-sweetening evening.

Wheeeee!!!!!!!!!

A mandarine sweetening evening, hmmmm, margo?
Now why didn't I think of that? Very Happy

I'm afraid, Olga, you have insufficient innate stupidity!

Wait for a frost to pick citrus for the table as it sweetens the fruit.

First frost (brrrrrrrrrrr )yesterday & I'm hoping it'll do the trick!

I tasted one of the most ripe mandarines a couple of days before: a nice tang, just a bit of extra sweetness needed.

They're looking like the real thing! Surprised Very Happy

(That frost had a very nasty effect on my (very abundant) potted basil plants. I should've seen it coming. Sad )

Oops, is the basil going to make it? We are nearing the summer solstice and our temps have been in the 60s during the day and the 50s at night. Chilly!

Will your basil make it or mine, k?
I'm sure yours will.
Under cover on extremely cold nights, especially in the initial stages.

We've had lots of chilly nights but that was the first frost. My basil had lasted much longer than usual (& was incredibly lush!) because of .... well climate change, actually.
One frost & quite a number of the leaves have wilted & some have those frost "burns" on them. <sigh> Best crop of basil in years!

I'd better do my making & freezing pesto thing very quickly, I think. I'd intended to, but ...... well, you know! Rolling Eyes

If you can't get to it and the weather will continue to be nasty, bring it inside to s sunny window! Frost burns won't hurt pesto! Our are ok. 50s, even 40s, don't do much damage to the herb.

I've put my 3 pots in a very sheltered & warm spot (for most of the day), k.

Usually, by now (winter), my basil would be long gone!
One of the very few positive outcomes of drought & climate change!

I'm trying to find the up side to climate change here...... It doesn't seem to have one.

No, there aren't exactly a lot of bonuses, I agree.

Just trying to make the best of the unfortunate circumstances ...

<sighing again>

Just updating to let you all know that I'm now starting to "harvest" the little devils! Makes me feel very virtuous, picking my own produce in my own backyard! Living off the land & all that. Laughing And they're not bad at all, though the pips could be a bit smaller. I'll be rather glad when a few more are picked & my poor over-burdened tree/bush can stand up straight again!

(that unexpected frost killed off 2 of my 3 pots of basil, k. And made no 3rd one look considerably less wonderful. Oh well .... I just knew it was too good to last!)

Msolga--

Congratulations. You've earned a bountiful harvest. Too bad about the basil, but frost is a seasonal fact-of-life.

Thank you, Noddy! Very Happy
And very timely, too! (I assume that mandarines are as choc-a-block full of vitiman C as oranges?) Perfect for a woman with a raging cold. <honk!>

Well only something like 30 of the little blighters left to be picked. Now very juicy & much sweeter. What a bumper crop that was! Next season there'll probably be nought fruit at all, as the tree recovers!

2008 mandarine update!

Prolific crop, just like last year, but tiny little (still green, of course) mandarines this year. No doubt the drought. I wonder if they'll be edible?

Can't wait to hear how they are! Do they ripen twice a year?

Nope, k, one very extended ripening season!

Last year I gave away bags & bags of them to addicted friends.

This year I'm curious about how these tiny ones will taste.

How they've grown so well in that unlikely spot is a complete mystery to me. Confused
