My life has gotten complicated and busy. Yes, I will still be in charge of Moderation/Administration. However, something's got to give and I have to step back a bit. Hence I will no longer be answering regular Forum Help requests. If I respond at all, it'll just be to link back to this topic.

Instead, three things will be happening:
  1. I encourage YOU -- all of you! -- to go ahead and respond with links if you notice a question that you've seen before (and that has been answered before). There really is no need to keep reinventing the wheel. By now, lots of questions have been answered before.

  2. The Administrator account will be revived to answer whatever questions are actually new. There shouldn't be that many. More than one person shares this account; it might be me answering, but it might not be. I'm not the only one who wears Administrator clothing.

  3. I will be adding to this topic. It will start off with links about some help-type subjects and I'll add more as they arise. For example, if a lot of people ask about, I dunno, avatars, I may write up something on avatars (there are no guarantees that I'll cover any particular subject, no matter how much interest there is in it; my time simply does not permit me to entertain everything). The idea is to keep this topic and its posts as short and sweet as possible. So you're going to mainly just see links to the best and most accurate answers out there -- no matter who did the answering -- instead of me repeating what's out there.

I invite everyone to link to this topic whenever they see a new Forum Help topic opened up which asks about something already addressed here. You don't have to be a Mod to help, and you don't need to be a Mod to have your link posted here.

There will, of course, be older, out of date material out there -- the site continues to evolve, and it's simply too daunting to bring everything up to date. Your assumption should be that if a topic is handled here, that the treatment of it is as current and as accurate as I know. If a topic is not handled here, then it's fair to assume that whatever is my or Craven's most recent statement about it is the most accurate and current information we have on the matter.

For personal or private matters, please continue to contact the Help Desk. Please don't wait for me to address your particular issue here, as I might not get to it, even if you address me directly (sorry, but there just aren't enough hours in a day).

To keep this topic short and sweet, and make sure that everyone can find the information they need, this topic will be locked. Therefore, you cannot type "bookmark" in order to add it to your posts. Rather, if you want to follow this topic, click "email updates" in the lower right corner of the page, or add it as a favorite in your particular browser.

I'm sorry that you won't be able to ask questions in this particular topic, but experience has shown that leaving a topic like this unlocked tends to result in a meandering off-topic discussion or a topic that gets so large (even if it more or less stays true to the subject) that it becomes unreadable. I want this to be a handy reference for you.

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone, past, present and future, who takes the time to seriously answer Forum Help topics. There are plenty of places to have fun on A2K, and even Forum Help isn't always 100% serious, but when people ask a question here, we on the Moderating Team have to make the assumption that the questioner wants an actual answer. One that is as accurate and up to date as possible. One that doesn't mock the questioner. One that provides information that the entire community can use.

I also want to take this opportunity to apologize for losing my patience. As we approach our fifth anniversary, this site does not get any smaller or easier to manage. Hence we ask for your cooperation so that we may serve you better. Thank you.

IV. Copyright
If an image is listed as copywritten, don't upload it to the site. We on the Moderating Team cannot police every single image on Able2know. However, if a person who owns a copywritten image asks us to remove it, we will as a courtesy to fellow webmasters. Furthermore, if right-clicking is disabled or difficult, that means that a site owner is trying to keep you from uploading or displaying a picture that is hosted there. Please respect that and do not try to get around it.

    A. [color=red]Red x's[/color] If an image is copywritten, a webmaster may remove it or change the address. This is one reason why an image may have been visible at one point but no longer is. http://www.able2know.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=90074

V. Obscene images
Obscene images are absolutely not allowed. This is a hosting issue for us and there can be no exceptions.

VI. Violent images
It is our policy to allow latitude in postings but we are also mindful of the fact that the site is 13 and up. We are also mindful of parents accessing Able2know who have children who might be looking over their shoulders. In general, if a violent image is posted, we will delete the image tags so that just the link is shown, and will often add a warning. That way, an adult is alerted to the nature of the content and can view it, if he or she so chooses, when a child is not in the room. We have found that this practice is also helpful to members who access Able2know from work, where a surfeit of such images can cause a site to be blocked at a work place. It is our desire to keep A2K accessible from as many places as possible while balancing that with as flexible a posting policy as possible. This is not censorship; rather, it is our response to the reality of doing our best to accommodate a wide variety of posters and posting styles, and our hosting company.

    A. Reposting images that have been stripped of their image tags If you persist on reposting images where we have removed the tags, disciplinary action may follow. As was previously stated, the removal of tags (often accompanied by a warning from the Moderating Team) is our method of accommodating a large number of very different users while maintaining a good relationship with our hosting company. Conversion from visible imagery to the urls for these images allows members to make their own decisions as to whether they wish to view such imagery. Reposting overly violent images undermines this and therefore we take it very seriously.

VII. Posting pictures of other members or other members' children
    A. We will generally not get involved in this except to state that it is a courtesy to ask before posting, even after a gathering. In fact, that can be a part of the gathering, either asking at the time or asking to exchange email addresses in case anyone wants to review pictures before they are posted. In order to get around the problem of having a picture of twenty people vetoed by one person, consider taking several mixed photographs or getting creative with Photoshop. B. Going along with [i]A[/i], it is also good practice to ask before snapping pictures, although anyone attending an A2K gathering should expect that a camera may be there. Camera shy individuals should make that known to anyone at a gathering who is filming (one way to get around this is to offer to take the pictures yourself). The Moderating Team will not get involved in these types of disputes but we do ask that members be courteous to and respectful of one another. C. You should always ask before posting photographs or drawings of other members' children, due to the unfortunate existence of online predators. This should be done even the child was at a gathering. If a child has gotten into a picture and the parent does not want the photograph to be posted, one solution is to photoshop out the child's image. If you are unsure of how to do this, ask in the Computers forum.

VIII. Detailed instructions on how to post imagery

For photos already online:
  1. Find a photo you like
  2. Right-click on the photo and select "Properties"
  3. Copy whatever it says under Address. Everything, make sure you get it all. The easiest way to do this is to "paint" the entire address and click ctrl-C on your keyboard
  4. Type an image tag in the post reply box. The opening tag looks like this: [code][img][/code]
  5. Then paste in the photo url, say: http://www.ceramichousenumbers.com/database/design_tiles/seashell.jpg
  6. Then type the closing image tag (don't leave spaces between the tags and the url. The closing tag looks like this: [code][/img][/code]
  7. Et voila!

http://www.ceramichousenumbers.com/database/design_tiles/seashell.jpg

  1. You can also do this by clicking the IMG link above, but note that you might get a notice that says, "Hamster 547 ... reports "
  2. At the top of the page, you'll also see a message that says, "This website is using a scripted window to ask you for information. If you trust this website, click here to allow scripted windows."
  3. Click there and you'll get a screen menu where one of the selections is Temporarily Allow Scripted Windows. Click that.
  4. Click the IMG link again
  5. Paste the url into the box provided and click OK

Possible issues with posting photos:
  • You link to a photo that throws an error, usually something like, "Don't hotlink our images". You've got 2 choices. Either download the picture and host it yourself or find another image (which might be identical to the image in question). You can avoid some of this by previewing your post before submitting it.
  • You just get a url (with the image tags) and no picture. Some reasons are that the url might be wrong (it should end with .jpg, .bmp or .gif usually). It might have a session ID in it (these are very long strings of numbers and letters which temporarily identify visitors to websites). In that case, you might be able to fix it by scrubbing out the session ID. Or it might just not work -- the only remedies there are either to host the image yourself or hunt for another one. Another reason may be that the image tags are not complete. They need square brackets on both sides and the closing tag must have a forward slash (/) and there cannot be any spacing between the forward slash and img (e. g.: /img, not / img)
  • You can see the pic but no one else can. Because you've viewed the image, it's in your cache. But it isn't in others' caches. They can right-click the image, see the url you used and paste that into their browser's address bar. Then they'll see the image and it'll end up in their cache as well.
  • You see the pic and it works once, then it stops working, even for you. A mystery, though it may have something to do with webmasters not wanting their images to be hotlinked. Standard remedies apply.
  • You've got the image tags showing up on either side of your picture. This means you typed the tags twice (sometimes people do this if they load a photo onto a site like photobucket, which provides everything for linking, including the image tags, but the user may have not realized this and added tags a second time. Again, previewing is a good idea. Just delete the second set of tags.
  • An older image is gone. The owner probably moved, deleted or renamed the picture. Not a lot you can do about this, but if you know the photo owner, you can ask to have it put back or where it's gone to.
  • The image stretches the screen. You don't have a lot of remedies here. If it's your own picture, downsize (use Paint or any other image resizing tool; just Google the term image resizing tool and see what you get) it and reupload it. If it isn't your image, either find a smaller version elsewhere or don't post the pic. If you can right-click and copy the picture, you can host it yourself (and thereby you can resize it as well).

Hosting an image yourself:
  • You need an image-hosting site, such as Photobucket or Imageshack (just Google them). You cannot host a photo from your own PC.
  • Upload the image in whatever manner the site says to do so. On Photobucket, you just browse your PC, click on the image once you've found it and click OK or Submit or something like that.
  • Copy the image url from the site. In Photobucket's case, they also give you the image tags, so keep that in mind.
  • Paste into the reply post box.
  • Preview to check things, then click Submit.

Odds 'n Ends:
  • Our displaying of images does not load down A2K in the slightest. The only issue you might experience is slower opening as some photos take longer to open than others. But it does not mean the A2K server is being loaded or crashing. The A2K server is unaffected. It's the image's hosting server that is affected.
  • Why don't people want their images hotlinked? Part of it is server load (and cost!), part of it is privacy or copyright claims. Webmasters can (it's very simple, really) disable right-clicking and hotlinking, and we see that all the time. For those who haven't, we on the Help Desk are happy to direct them to instructions of how to do that. As for privacy, the person put the photo out there online. They have a remedy: take the photo offline. But this is the Internet. Anyone can find more or less anything, and it can be copied. That's life in this particular big city. As for any other copyright claims or questions, direct them to the Help Desk. We have seen these before and, if we feel the claim to copyright is legitimate, we may take down an image or work with that person to disable hotlinking.
  • Can you hotlink to images on A2K? Nope. Craven disabled that years ago. If you want to display an A2K image elsewhere, you've got the usual choices. However, since, aside from the avatar gallery and the site imagery (e. g. the logo, the smilies, the buttons, etc.) on the stylesheet, any image on A2K comes from somewhere else. So just right-click on it and link to it from there.
  • Where do great images come from? Anywhere. I personally just go to Google, select images and search from there, unless I have a very specific site in mind. I also make sure to select either medium or small images as large ones are screen-stretchers.
  • What about risqué imagery? The Moderating Team will check these images and make sure that they conform to our site hosting agreement. Pornographic images do not, and they will be pulled immediately -- you can jeopardize your site membership for posting porn. We take it very seriously. But we also appreciate that there are some images that are on the fence and so we take them on a case by case basis.
  • Someone posted my photo without my permission! Unless they took it out of your photo album, scanned it and uploaded it, the image came from either you or from organizations you've been associated with (e. g. work or perhaps school or a member organization like the Elks). Your remedy is: ask the organization(s) to take your photo down, and take down anything you've posted. And talk to the person who's displaying your photo; perhaps they will voluntarily take it down. And, if not (or if you want to keep your photo out there but not have one particular person view or copy or display it), reframe your thinking. Imagery on the 'net is available to everyone -- so think before you upload.

[b]I.[/b] Multiple postings can occur if you click "Submit" more than once while waiting for the confirmation page to load. In particular, this can be a problem for dialup users. Multiplied postings can also be simulated if you have a previous post in your clipboard (say, if you copied it from elsewhere) and then by accident pasted it into a second post. The forum software is supposed to prevent some duplicated postings but it does not catch all of them. [list]The Moderating Team will not remove multiple identical posts from a topic. Multiple identical [i]topics[/i] from the same poster will be removed if they have not yet been answered.

II. Multiple forum posting (cross-posting)
http://www.able2know.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3717

    A. The Moderating Team can cross-post topics. Send in a ticket to the Help Desk, but note that this is a courtesy and is not considered by us to be a high priority. We will only cross-post to a second forum. You cannot have your topic listed in all of the forums and any attempts to do so (most likely through repetitious posting of the same topic in forum after forum after forum) will be considered by us to be spam. B. The Moderating Team will not attempt to herd posters to one topic if there are several very similar ones out there. However, if members wish to leave urls to redirect their fellow members, they are welcome to do so. No one is under any obligation to do so. http://www.able2know.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=2634455#2634455 C. It is the very nature of A2K for there to be multiple topics, either at or about the same time or at different times (separated by years, even). Newbies in particular aren't necessarily going to go hunting for the answer to their question when it's a lot easier to just start a topic and click Submit. This is often also true of long-term members. If you find an older topic that answers a new question, feel free to link to it. Again, you are under no obligation to do so. Or simply answer the new topic. Or ignore it if it bothers you that the umpteenth person has asked [i]what is love[/i] or [i]what's your favorite song[/i]. D. The Moderating Team cannot merge topics.

III. Successor Topics

    A. Successor topics are created, usually by the Moderating Team, when we experience technical difficulties from our end. It is not due to any overuse of the site or overly rapid postings, and it is not a subtle comment on disciplinary actions, etc. If you wish to create a successor topic on your own, feel free to go ahead. If you wish for the Moderating Team to lock the previous topic, send a ticket to the Help Desk, but note that this is a courtesy and we will not consider it to be a high priority. B. If a successor topic is being created, a Moderator has to lock the older topic, copy the url for the older topic, create the new topic, paste the url for the older topic into the newer one, and then add the url for the newer topic to the older one. The Moderator may also feature the new topic and may also need to defeature the older one. These operations are performed fairly quickly but they are not instantaneous so have a little patience when a successor topic is being prepared. We apologize for any inconvenience that occurs during any delays. C. Some topics are very long but don't have any successor topics. This is because the Moderating Team has not yet experienced technical difficulties with those topics. It's possible that we never will and there is no way for us to predict that.

Avatars
Some information on Avatars

[b]I.[/b] Avatar Gallery [list]A. The gallery does not and, so far as we know, has never, contained personal photos of any members. Photos in the gallery are either not of humans (e. g. flowers) or of celebs and are certainly not known A2Kers. The gallery doesn't have members' personal photos for use as avatars, and never has. http://www.able2know.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=2613503#2613503 B. Gallery avatars can be used by anyone. No one on A2k has the rights to any of them. http://www.able2know.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=9003#9003 C. There are issues with the Gallery, as of this writing. The Gallery currently does not seem to work well for most users. If you want to use an avatar from the Gallery, send a ticket to the Help Desk and be [i]very specific[/i] as to which avatar you want. E. g. something like: [i]Animals group, second row from the bottom, fourth picture from the right; it's a mainly blue dog.[/i]. This will help us to serve you better and more quickly. Note that [b]we perform this service as a courtesy so multiple rapid Gallery avatar changes are [color=red]not[/color] going to be honored by us[/b].

II. Creating your own avatar
http://www.able2know.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=5940#5940

    A. Image processing/shrinking http://www.able2know.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=128#128 http://www.able2know.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=1756#1756 http://www.able2know.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=355405#355405 http://www.able2know.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=2449747#2449747

III. Using an avatar image from your PC

IV. Using an avatar image from the 'net
http://www.able2know.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=14599#14599

V. Using someone else's picture

    A. Permissions We won't get involved in this but we [i]highly recommend[/i] advance permission to use another member's image as your avatar. B. Avatars that copy another member's avatar are acceptable so long as the copied avatars aren't the person's [i]own actual[/i] image (generally this refers to their face or a portion thereof). Then permission, either explicit or implicit, is [i]highly recommended[/i]. If that person objects, we will pull the avatar. However, 85 members with avatars of the same generic black cat are perfectly fine. C. Moderators will not get involved in avatar disputes, except regarding the use of another member's actual image without their permission, and then only if we are contacted by that member (the one whose image was used without permission) via the [i]Help Desk[/i].

VI. Obscene avatars aren't allowed. There are no exceptions to this rule whatsoever because this is a site hosting issue for us.

http://www.able2know.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=532599#532599

VII. Avatars are a privilege

Your ability to post an avatar can and will be suspended by the Moderating Team if you abuse this privilege. If you have questions as to whether a chosen avatar violates the Terms of Service, send a ticket to the Help Desk and ask.[/list]

Some general information on reporting errors and bugs
Some general information on reporting errors and bugs

A few things about errors and problems on this and any other site:[list]
  • Transient errors are the hardest to fix. If it can't be duplicated, chalk it up to your system or operator error. That is not alwaysa right, of course, but chasing transient errors is very hard, particularly for a small support team.
  • If you can show the error, that's the easiest thing for the support team. That is, take a screen print and post it. If there's an error message, copy it word for word.
  • Be as specific as possible. The site no longer works for me! is pretty useless to support. I get a popup every time I go to New Topics is much, much more useful.
  • Try to add as much helpful information as possible. That is, do you have a Mac or a PC? Are you running Internet Explorer, Firefox or some other browser? Did you recently download anything?
  • Help yourself as much as you can. E. g. if it looks like spyware or a virus, update your virus protection and run scans and fixes as you see them, because you're just going to be asked to do that, anyway.
  • Be patient. Support can sometimes take a while, as things that are invisible to you may need to be fixed before your problem can be tackled. Courtesy goes a long way.
  • Don't assume we know about a problem, but do hunt for mentionings of whatever you're seeing. If you're seeing something that others are, post that as a reply to their topic as opposed to opening up a new topic. That way we can tell if an issue is localized or widespread.
  • Don't assume a problem is going to remain that way forever. It probably won't, so occasionally try to do whatever it was that you were trying to do when you first saw the issue. This is also helpful to us, e. g. if you tried to post a photo and have gotten errors for the past three days' worth of trying. And, finally,
  • Don't add extraneous chatter to the help topics!!! It's hard enough to figure out what's wrong without users going on and on about their vacations and the like. There are about a million places on this site to gab. So please leave the help topics alone and don't share your opinions on world affairs on them so that support can do their jobs as quickly and efficiently as possible.
[/list]

Thank you.
