Oceans -- Out of sight, out of our mind

The ocean is a pretty big place, but not so big that it can swallow everything we do.

This article about rubber duckies adrift for 11 years seems awfully cute, but reminds us that "about 10,000 containers fall off cargo ships each year, creating all manner of flotsam and jetsam."

Question -- Apart from major oil spills, what do you think is the BIGGEST impact that people have on the oceans?

Part 2 -- Do you think anything can really be done about it?

I heard a piece on NPR this weekend regarding the amount of degrading plastic thats out in the seas. This material is undergoing photo degredation and smaller and smaller chunks are getting caught in mid oceanic gyres and are collecting in the mid pacific and the sargasso etc. Some larval fish are actually dying from ingestion and inability to void plastic . They apparently feed on the krill with their mouths wide open and plastic just flows into their guts.
