Holiday Cryptic 65A. Support outspoken deputies.
I have ASSIST-N-E
It could be assistance but that doesn't seem to fit the clue properly.
Help welcomed please.

Hi willywagtail

I have assistance for 65a too, but I have some doubts like you. For 56d I have 'archtype' to fit 65a in. What do you have for 56d?

Hi Dutchy,
I have archetype for 56D. I think I got it from you.
Now this 65A.
As I see it: support=assist, so far so good.
BUT how can 'outspoken deputies = ance'
assistants would = deputies (being workers) but then archetype hasn't got an S. Deputies are assistants.
Everyone seems to have put assistance so it must be right.
I am going to ask Christine to explain the connection in "Judge Sums Up"
Pity she can't explain it before we all send our efforts in, hey.
Thanks to all who put into this.
Could 56 possibly be FREESTYLE?
I am flummoxed

The correct answer is ARCHETYPE (ARCHE - anagram of reach, TYPE - to write on machine)

Well All,
this is going to really confuse the issue. I typed in ASSISTANTE which fits the spaces for 65A and keeps ARCHETYPES firmly in place.

Assistante is a helper to someone, nurse, teacher, business person etc.
(so is a deputy)

Assistante seems to fit the clue better than Assistance but I don't feel comfortable with either word.

If Assistance is the answer then the 2 words 'outspoken deputies' need not have been in the clue because support IS assistance.
Oh God, this is getting deep. Could Lovatts be so devious?

about 56d. I believe some of the words in cryptic clues are irrelevant, just put in to confuse one, could someone else have some input on this.
Where are you Lezzles Rolling Eyes
I'm sticking with assistance which finishes with the E in archetype until I can be convinced otherwise.

Hi willy
back to 65a. Where did you find the word assistante, I have looked in all my dictionaries and also online dict. and free dict. and cant find assistante in any of them.
According to one of my dictionaries archetype means: avatar, form, model and pattern. Will keep looking at both these clues but I'm no expert .

Hi Ww & Tuesday

I'm sticking with "archetype" and "assistance" mainly because assistance" is another word for "support" and I feel deputies doesn't come into it.

Holiday cryptis,,,,,ASSIST,,,,,
Hi Tuesday and Dutchy,
today I found it is spelt ASSISTENtE and not ASSISTANTE. Now I can't get back to where I found it. BUT I WILL.

In my Encarta dict, Readers Digest dict and Collins Thesaurus it is written:
Assistant is a trusted deputy or assistant manager.

I am quite convinced 56D is ARCHETYPES so this 65A doesn't quite fit.
BUT the French for ASSISTANT is ASSISTENTE or ASSISTANTE,
which does fit.
My head is spinning, must go and start my Easter eggs and get back to this later.
Happy Easter all,
willywagtail

G'Day Dutchy,
yup, one look also gave me ASSISTENTE. That is ASSISTANT in English, and assistant is another word for DEPUTY.
So hey, that's what I'm going for.
Christine is going to explain about this word in "Judge sums up"
What's the weather like up there, there was ground mist early on here so looks like we are in for another beautiful day. Rainless though.

Morning WW

Glorious Easter here, around 30 degrees, but like you badly need the rain. Let me know what you come up with after your visit to the library. Still have a stack of Lovatts books to finish. Laughing

Cryptic thingy = deputy
Hi Dutchy,
didn't get to the library. I followed my hunch and sent the French version word in.
This could be where I fall flat on my face but heck, that's what it's all about isn't it? Freedom of choice. Idea
Actually, both words are right......
It is how we decipher the clue and it can be either way.
Mind you, I don't always take the right road, I often get lost.
Ha ha ha ha ha
ww
ps. I'm at a loose end now, no crosswords to do. I am free to attend to my house cleaning jobs. Ugh.
