Moving to Sydney- Need Suggestions

My fiance will be moving to Sydney in a few weeks and we were wondering if anyone could suggest an area that has cheap/moderate one bedroom rental apartments and is close to public transportation. I've researched Glebe and Pyrmont but I'm not sure if there are other suburbs I should look into. Also, some of the rental properties require a bond...is that the same thing as a deposit?

And one more thing, how would one go about applying for financial/housing assistance? The reason I'm asking is because my fiance overstayed his visit (12 years!) in the U.S. and is being deported back to Australia. He will need a lot of financial help since he has no family or friends in Australia to support him temporarily.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated

re the bond This is very usual. A bond is a security deposit in case something is damaged or you leave without paying rent. The bond must be placed in a trust fund. It is usually the equivelent of 4 weeks rent, but that varies from landlord to landlord. The bond will be refunded at the completion of your lease if all is in order.

Hi,

Did your fiance make it back to Australia? I visited a friend in Miranda NSW in 2000, and it is right on the train line with a shopping mall, restaurants, [a Lone Star Steakhouse] and looks like a place for moderately priced rentals. Please let me know how you are doing on planning the trip down under.
