This "thing" he allegedly created does not need electricity.

A D

Male, Dead, Real
Born after 1800/before 1900
Not in Showbiz
Not European
Yes American
Not considered a criminal
he is best remembered for inventing something but historians agree he did NOT really invent it
this thing does not need electricity.

9 Q to go

ADDITIONAL CLUE: calling this invention a 'thing' is misleading. It is non-tangible. You cannot hold it in your hand, nor in a wheelbarrow, nor a cargo ship. Yet most US citizens, Canadians, Mexicans, Central Americans and Japanese have seen it.

WoW!

Hmm. Is this more of discovery, rather than an invention?

I won't count that as a full question. I think you'd have to say this more an invention (maybe CREATION is the right word?) than a discovery. The same historians that say A D did not really invent it say that it has no single inventor but more or less EVOLVED. [what, a creation vs. evolution debate?]

Another clue: this 'thing' is rarely seen in Europe.

I'm surprised this is that hard. I must be over-complicating it. "Japanese" should be a big clue. Think about things that the USA and Japan have in common that the USA and Europe do not.

Another clue: The 'thing' is rarely if ever seen during the winter

Home run.

ABNER DOUBLEDAY is correct.

Doubleday was the Union officer that fired the first shot (from the Union side) of the Civil War at the battle of Fort Sumter.

Years later the legend arose that he was the inventor of baseball. (It's my understanding that some hack sportswriter at the turn of the 20th Century, trying to give baseball a glorious history, picked the war hero as the inventor)
