Valuable clue: He was well-known in 19th Century America for an accomplishment during the American Civil War, but he is not well remembered for that today. Because of his military fame, he was pegged in legend as the creator/inventor of (thing), which is a non-military creation/invention. It is my understanding that he never claimed to have invented it, but that the legend started after his death.
