102D Make whole. UNIFY AND UNITY both fit. Wondering what others have chosen and why.

119A Major Indonesian isle. A-A- Java???

Am I right with 111D SAKE?
Any help is welcomed.

Hi willywagtail,

Don't have the crossword so no idea if 111d SAKE is correct.

UNIFY looks better than UNITY to me. And I think the Indonesian isle may be ACEH.

No doubt someone (are you out there Dutchy?!) will confirm.

Hi willywagtail

Have gone for "unity" 102 d, my reference:
Dictionary.com Unabridged
u·ni·ty
-noun, plural -ties. 1. the state of being one; oneness.
2. a whole or totality as combining all its parts into one.
3. the state or fact of being united or combined into one, as of the parts of a whole; unification.

119a = java
11d = sake

Hope this helps.

I think the script went peculiar then. Not sure what it will be like. WW

Actually Dutchy I am now confused. Have looked at Dictionary unabridged. UNITY and UNIFY.
Both of them say 'make into one'
According to dictionary, you can UNIFY something but can you UNITY something. I must think about it. I wish she hadn't put that clue in.

Thanks for info on issues. It is Holiday I am waiting for. Should be here around Mondayish.
Starhunts irritate me and haven't seen Variety. I will look at it on the net.

Re UNITY and UNIFY let's wait and see if someone else comes up with something to help you with the confusion.

I'm sticking with "unity". Smile

unify: to bring together; combine (Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)
unity: the state of being joined together or in agreement ( " )
" : the state of being united or forming a whole (Oxford)
unify :make or become united (Oxford)
unity : the quality or state of being made one (Merriam-Webster's)
unify :to make into a unit or a coherent whole (Merriam-Webster's)
My money is on UNITY

Much as it pains me, I'm going to have to disagree with farkha & Dutchy!

In my opinion, the wording of the clue: "Make whole" suggests an action. "Unity", using the above definitions, refers to a state of being. "Unite" would make more sense in the context of the clue.

UNIFY! UNIFY!

lmur I also value your input greatly but would like to bring the big guns into play. Smile

Go to the number one puzzle site on the net and type in your question and study the answer you get, take particular notice of the number of stars your top answer get.

Go to http://www.oneacross.com/ and do your thing, and report back. Laughing

Codswallop my friend! Laughing

A verb is a verb and a noun is a noun!

(Did you notice in the list of options for One Across is says something along the lines of it not working so well for cryptic or British style crosswords? And we know Christine's head is set well and truly in dear old Blighty when in comes to clues!)

I'm 100% with lmur on this one!

UNIFY! UNIFY! UNIFY!

Hi lezzles, looks you have a bit of fire back in your belly, good on you and thank you for your input. I'm pleased we're getting some positive feedback on this one, Dutchy is not yet swayed though. Laughing

Keep em' coming.

Well Dutchy, Lezzles, Imur and Farkha,
you can UNIFY a jigsaw puzzle but it doesn't make sense to say you can UNITY it.

Your input is very illuminating and helpful but I am going with UNIFY.
I will make a note on my scanned copy to check up on the right answer.
The only other way is to enter a second Stinker with the other choice of word.

Well done willywagtail, you have considered the options and have made your choice, that's what this game is all about.

Good luck, Dutchy.

Dutchy, well worth a revisit to Unify and Unity. The act 'make' needs a verb(in this case Unify-To make into or become a unit). The result would be a noun (in this case Unity- The state or quality of being one)

Hi Farkha.

Nice to know you've given the subject some further thought, am I to understand you know favour 'unify' ?

I'm going to have a fresh look at all the "evidence" tomorrow and try to remove all seeds of doubt. Will report back. Smile

Well Dutchy, I did as you asked and achieved one star for "unify", noting that "unity" was given five stars!

However, in this instance, I prefer quality to quantity. Laughing

I just hope that unity can be attained in this critical matter. Laughing Laughing
