@McTag,
Breast implants: Government's plan goes arse-down

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16510507

""We're only sitting here today because the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), their own regulatory authority, has approved these implants and obviously hasn't done their proper checking."

@izzythepush,
I don't even know who my local MP is. Or which party he or she is in.

@spendius,
Well, now you've something to find out. My MP is a fascist bitch so I don't bother writing to her at all. Fortunately there's two outstanding local MPs I can talk to.

Joke of the week: Martin McGuinness, talking to Alex Salmond and Nick Clegg in Ireland this morning, offered to host peace talks in Belfast between Alex Salmond and David Cameron.

That Italian skipper nipped off his sinking cruise liner pretty sharpish.

He wouldn't have lasted long in Nelson's navy.

@McTag,
Pretty weak individual that Captain McTag, I trust the authorities will convict him of gross neglect, an accident like that should not happen in todays age with all the modern navigation equipment at his disposal.

Exactly, I think, that's one of the reasons such accidents happen: you rely on the "modern navigational equipment" and forget that navigation can be done 'handmade'.

@Walter Hinteler,
Accidents happen for many reasons and usually unfortunate combinations of them. Accidents can only be reduced. They can never be eliminated. If they could be eliminated there would be no insurance industry.

The general rule is that if there is an insurance premium to pay there is a risk involved. The level of the premium quantifies the risk.

@spendius,

Has anyone else, when looking at a modern cruise liner (big, boxy, high profile, many upper decks with balconies) and indeed large container ships piled high, thought "that doesn't look very stable to me....." It only needs for something to go wrong, such as water in the lower hull (ro-ro ferries) for the whole thing to fail spectacularly.

Expect new design criteria to be issued after a lengthy enquiry.

@McTag,
They do look more and more like Mississippi river boats, which need a flat bottom because of the relative shallow waters of the river. I think they look too top heavy to go out on the Ocean, but then again what do I know, I'm no engineer.

Mac and I were just pointing out how something looked to a layman. I have to say, because I'm no engineer, your figures mean very little to me.

@izzythepush,
I'm no engineer neither (but McTag is Very Happy ).
I do think, however, that 8.3 m draught is quite a lot and the breadth (35.5 m) looks sufficient, too.
