This article embodies all the reasons why "Red" Ken Livingstone has become very weary and evasive of the press - most of it is a collection of gossippy personal putdowns, strung together in something of a hit piece.

But boy, is it well written. Entertaining, evocative.

I liked his choice of collective noun- a fistful of lesbians.

Thank God for the French.

Today I'm going to get two new tyres fitted on my car and get the spare which is a new Michelin very nice tyre hooray for the French again swopped from my spare to the rear offside- I can't do it myself because it's not on an alloy wheel and so it will cost an extra tenner for refitting and balancing.

What do you expect Mac?

I raised the subject of the wealth gap between the north and south-east.

Nothing doing.

You raised the mayoral election in London.

Nothing doing.

I raised the idea that a nation that stops smoking is finished. JUst like it is finished if all the military run away to avoid risking their lives and start posing in theme parks to fill the void.

Nothing doing except PC rants of one sort or another.

I raised inactivity/ hyperactivity.

Nothing doing.

Of course the thread will die under such conditions.

Contactless sociability is nothing but huddling together for comfort and reassurance. There's no serious demand for it. It goes nowhere.

Your media is killing everything so that it can live.

Well each to his own- I don't mind brainless chitchat or bad jokes if there's nothing else. I can't do intellectual treatises anyway. And if anyone else attempts one, I often can't be arsed to refute any of it.

Tell you what though. I have noticed, and noticed again today as I was roadtesting my tyres, that often modern builders or brickies ruin what could have been a nice bit of walling or construction work by bad choice of mortar.
Brick manufacturers and architects go to some lengths to get the choice of a nice brick right (and there are plenty on the market, even if they are made from a non-renewable source) and then the bloody brickies mess it all up by using badly coloured mortar, usually too strong i.e with too much cement in it.
Su the overall appearance is crap, and cement runs stain the surface of the wall forever after.

Who else objects to dark red brick with light grey mortar? Brickies? I wouldn't pay them in washers. Should be bloody shot, the lot of 'em. Most anyway.

Probably the fault of sub-contracting. No aesthetic sense, no artistic input, no responsibility for appropriatenes or finished appearance, throw it up and collect the cash then off to the next botch-up.

Hey Mac

I'm awake - but guess I might fall into the "chit-chat" department. However, just to let you know it's a stunning day in Devon - Spring is finally here and it's looking good.

I have a house full of boxes - all packed - as I was supposed to complete a coupla weeks ago - and as yet - still havent exchanged Rolling Eyes The joys. I am starting to walk again - which so far, along with physio, has been a lot less harrowing than anticipated. Still can't drive for another month - which is more frustrating than anything else - but eventually life will return to normal.

Black Tulip lives nearby and we get together. Our kids are best friends.

So - don't really have much to say except gibberish yabbering - but do hope that you are well and all is good for you and yours.

The aesthetic sense is something of a mystery Mac. The modern trend seems to be concentrated on interiors.

But I've never heard of road testing new tyres before. I always had new tyres fitted and then just carried on where I was heading and I can't say I've ever noticed any effects. Perhaps it is because I drive slowly.

I don't see the point of brainless chit-chat unless seduction is in the offing. Then it seems to be a necessary trial.

Some famous person once said that all wisdom begins with jokes so I like jokes.

On Livingstone - there was an article by Callvin Trillin about the London mayoral race participants in a recent New Yorker, a good read for me. Alas, only available in an abstract at this point.

Just come in....Had a meal and a couple of beers with my cousin, visiting Manchester. We finished up in Sam's Chop House, Cross Street. Recommend it.

I see Chelsea equalised. I think they'll lose at Stamford Bridge.

Hey did anyone read the link I put up about the taxi that went to Yorkshire to see Chelsea at home? Hee Hee

My days of drinking lots are long gone. As befits members of the middle claaaass we just had two big glasses of red wine with our meal, than two pints of Black Sheep in the pub afterwards.
He's going to Abu Dhabi next week as it 'appens, quite a contrast to rainy Manchester.

The pub was quiet, as there were no TV screens for the football match, which suited us fine.

I haven't seen our Smorgs for a while; she seems to be keeping a low profile. Let's hope she's okay.

As much as I can tell from studying a few sites, the match last night and next week between Chelsea and Liverpool is being played for over £30 million. Maybe £40 million.

Which raises an interesting question. Is it the passion we want to see and football played for those stakes provide it best. Of course passion can be generated on the pitch with patriotism but are players who do that as fit and skilful as those whose passions are aroused by money. Money can do a great deal for a man who might not be too big a deal without it. And we are all patriotic to a degree even though international forces are weakening those ideas.

I think the thought of a grandson opening Wisden to look for his Grandad's name in Test Matches is a prime cause of passion in cricketers.

Spender S.C. stumped Gilchrist bowled Warne 0. Looks really bad. That's when it is necessary to explain about the footholes and the flock of seagulls being startled by something and silly mid-on casting a shadow where the ball bounced.

It must be an antidote to cynicism.

You all have to agree that 1:0 to Liverpool was pretty damned close. Fortunately my mate paid up before Riise scored (I wish).

Anyhoo TONIGHT IS THE BIG ONE

1:1 will be the result. (I have it on best authority...)

Utd have the better team. without the squabbles. Will be interesting.

that was the most excruciating game. I'd rather have root canal surgery.

never seen ManU so dominated, almost humiliated.

But 0:0 at the nou Camp is a great result, and as you say Walter new game new luck. Just one goal at Old Trafford....

Actually if Barca play 1/2 as well as they did tonight they will probably win 2:0
