The problem the philistine has with literature, and art generally, is that its splendours are interiorised and private and thus precious.
The philistine is all exteriority. The "flashed" assertion, usually faked; a surface effect.
The public display of exteriority is always of aggressive intent and invariably crass as it lends itself to an absence of originality; it all been done before and to be original you just change the colour of your pants or find some easy way of exaggeration. More bricks in the wall type of thing. Originality is never suitable for public display because it is not understood and thus unacceptable. The philistine always has to feel that he understands everything.
The high point of the Roman civilisation (2nd Century) saw a strong move in domestic architecture towards the splendours of the interior apartments and private pleasures and away from ostentatious displays of an obviously invidious nature.
