Hi!
I have been wracking my brain trying to find the answer to this riddle. Can anyone help me?
I am found on every playground.
I am found in every office building
I am long... but also short
I am fat but sometimes skinny
I make dogs bark
And fat people cry
You can place a bet on me
I have more numbers than a phone book
I am lighter than a feather... but i have enough strength to kill a black bear..
Colleges despise me and preschoolers love me...
What am I?
The answer has to be true for each statement. I already know that it is NOT "shadows" or "time".

maybe the riddle has nothing to do with the question at the very end...
maybe the anwer to 'what am i' is 'you' or 'me'....or might very well be 'what'

Hmm, LIGHT works for many of them.
* Light is certainly on every playground and office building.
* Light exists in all frequencies and wavelengths, so it is both short and fat, long and skinny.
* You can place a bet over radio waves (which is a form of light) or the internet, which is largely optical networks.
* It has more numbers than a phonebook, because it is the collection of vast numbers of photons.
* Light is lighter than a feather, for it has no mass.
I have looked at this before and have not figured it out. I was thinking along the lines of lies, rumours, loneliness or gossip. I can't find one that fits all.
I even spent time researching it. Not the answer but what is lighter than a feather and what makes dogs bark still

Fits many of them, but not all, and certainly not the last one...
The part about dogs barking and fat people crying got me thinking about ricki lake...
I love riddles but this one has me stumped - its the bit about killing the bear that gets me, none of my answers would be strong enough to kill a bear!!
I felt like quoting the riddle, so that we don't have to flip back to the first page all the time...

Hmmm.... Hunger could kill a bear. But does it have more numbers than a phonebook? Is it fat or skinny?
I keep thinking that it is something abstract...
Why would God make fat people cry?
I HOPE ITS NOT GOD, THAT ANSWER IS SO BORING
Tomorrow I'm gonna go out and find out what makes fat people cry. Then I'll test if dogs begin barking while I do it...
