[Closed]Sessions bug :: please read

Reply Thu 3 Jul, 2003 01:33 pm
Today we had two instances (at least two that I saw) where the sessions table was full and nobody could surf the forums.

This is due to a bug in the unmodified code for these forums. I had been working on a fix for this and have been testing them on the test board for the upcoming forum version.

phpbb (the creators of the unmodified code for the boards) are also working on this bug and hope to fix it in the next release.

The thing is, this error happened twice today, requiring me to manually delete all the active sessions in the database.

I caught them within minutes each time but if I'm not around the problem would persist till I saw it.

So I have implemented code to fix this bug. The code will automatically increase the maximum amount the sessions table can hold and then when it hits a ceiling it will delete from the table.

I am announcing it here because I have not tested this code as well as I'd like to. And I'd liek to hear about users losing sessions and needing to log in etc.

Please report anything here.

Please note that there are many reasons that you might have to log in again. Please look for uncharacteristic problems requiring say, a log in every 15 minutes (even when you are active on the board).

This topic will be deleted when it is no longer relevant.

Yes, that is the bug that was dealt with when I deleted all active sessions. That is also the issue I fixed and am hoping for feedback about.

So now that I fixed it, if you see it again (unlikely) PLEASE let me know.

If you see log in issies (this does not mean the inability t o log i, but rather the ending of an active and valid session) please report them.

Lemme explain it this way:

Because of the fact that some ISPs are stupid they decide to rotate IPs. So one visitor can cause hudreds of sessions.

The sessions table has a limit and it was reached twice today. phpbb (the authors of the original code that the forum runs on) did not include any way for this to be reduced.

I ahve been testing code taht would fix this by deleting older sessions when the table is full.

But because of the error today I implemented it now, instead of waiting for the next version.

So now I wanna know if the code deletes sessiosn too frequently etc.

So if you have to log in every few minutes let me know!

I ran into the bug twice earlier -- the one Phoenix described.

This thing you are asking us to look for -- will the indicator be similar to that other one?

No, if you see that other one it will be a fluke or a different session error.

Lemme put it this way.

If when the board is busy you find yourself needing to log in every 5 minutes let me know.

Sofia,

When did you see that message? 11AM (what time zone)?

If it was before this thread that is the error that was fixed.

------------

And what was the log in difficulty? Was an error message displayed?

And "Sat night" is confusing me. What do you mean?

OK

Not on Saturday night. It just wouldn't log in when I clicked on log in. It just stuck there on the log in screen, with no error message.

Saturday night...7/2/03 I tried about three different times that night, and couldn't log in.

Haven't had the problem since. Other groups came up with no problem. Just FYI.

I got a phpbb critical error code on thursday afternoon (PST). I was unable to log on to anything. My browser (or my connection?) then went down, I couldn't log on to my server for any internet browsing or sending or recieving mail. Finally, today, I spoke to my provider and we disconnected my router, then everything was fine. She said it was a problem with my router!. I don't know if this is helpful to you, because I have no idea what I'm talking about! But what ever happened screwed up my internet above and beyond getting into A2K. If you have any questions, ask away. Thanks

No questions, your ISP woes are not related. The error you saw here simply meant that my server couldn't write to my database. It does not have the ability to change anything on your end.

I have not experienced any problems logging in. I do have a different problem which i will post in the web support area, but i am wondering if it is related - Craven - do you think your google spider mod might have anything to do with this? i doubt it, as you mentioned phpbb did not implement a session id reducer, but i just thought it was worth mentioning.

Definitely not related I am not using that session ID code on this board (though it will be on this board in a few days). BTW, I'm hard at work making the next version of A2K so I'll get you those bits of code you were asking for when I gather it all together.

Ahh, it'll take more time to explain it than to just do it. It should be released in 2 days or so.
