Did You Know...

Did you know that there actually was a guy who we now know (if anyone knows) as Johnny Appleseed. Except his name was John Chapman.
When the western migration began, folks could get land for free or nearly for free if they would agree to cultivate it. Often times they would plant the fields or the orchards before they would build their houses.
Chapman moved towards the west a few years ahead of those folks. So when they got there he could sell them 2 or 3 year old apple trees which were suited for that land and would start producing in 5 more years.
I'll bet yall didn't know that.

@cicerone imposter,
You guys are so damn smart. Much smarter than this dumb Redneck living in his single-wide trailer in the mountains of Virginia.
But here is a question for yall. Notice that this thread has x-number of replies and almost 25 times that in views. This sleepy thread has 3400 views.
Compare that with virtually any other thread where the ratio is 1-10. Explain that, you coastal elitists.

...that deer hunting season in Virginia still has another week or so to go? And VA Game and Fisheries officials report that some 250,000 deer have been killed this season. That is not as many as had been expected (hoped for, in the minds of many). Hunters and available hunting land is decreasing, but the deer are re-producing like, um, rabbits.
Collisions between cars and deer are up markedly this year. Three of my employees have run into them.
I have deer and deer poop in my yard on a regular basis.
Did you know that, CI and Merry Andrew? I doubt it. I can send you some deer poop if you would like.

Well, it's not quite as exciting as deer poop, but did you know that the electric chair was invented by a dentist?

@realjohnboy,
This thread started in Jan, 2007. It is only up to about 7 pages but, if you have nothing better to do, read through it. I think you will find it amusing.

This probably won't work but I'm going to give it a try.

Everyday I hear something on the radio or from someone I run into and I say to myself "I didn't know that."

The idea here is to post those little factoids here. I would prefer that they be facts rather then this degenerating into opinions, but that is up to yall.

THERE ARE ONLY TWO RULES:
1 - ALL POSTS MUST BE IN YOUR OWN WORDS. NO CUTTING AND PASTING FROM OTHER SOURCES IS ALLOWED.
2 - POSTS ARE LIMITED TO, SAY, 150 WORDS OR LESS.

@realjohnboy,
My electric chair post wasn't an opinion. It really was a factoid. Sad

@Foxfyre,
Our posts crossed, Foxfyre. I wasn't questioning your factoid. I was simply reposting the beginning of the thingee to try to generate some new interest in this thread which, if you read from the beginning, has some amusing writing, There is no need to source postings here, unless someone challanges. That can then be resolved, perhaps, elsewhere.
I am sorry if my post seemed to be criticizing you and your post.

Didja know that Billy the Kid's real name was not William Bonney, as most people think, but Henry McCarty? William Bonney was an alias, just like "the kid" monicker.

Did you know that it takes an egg longer to boil in Florida than in Virginia?

@Foxfyre,
Without peaking in my dictionary:
1) To place (I set the book on the table);
2) Tennis term (She lost the first set 3-6);
3) A collection of related items (Her china set had eight plates...);

Did you know that Dr. Auma Obama, the President-elect's (half-)sister, liked Asterix ... especially when translated in various German regional languages and dialects?

And did you know that her PhD dissertation had the title (translated from German) "The concept of labour in Germany and its reflection in literature, selected works of German contempary literature between 1953 and 1983"?

@Walter Hinteler,
No, I didn't know that, Walter. But note she spelled "contemporary" wrong. How bright can she really be?
I am, of course, trying to beat the anti-Obama folks to the punch.
