Three business men on a business trip stop at a hotel. The cost of the room was $30.00, so they paid $10.00 each. After they had went to their room the manager realized the price should have been $25.00.
He took $5.00 out of the register and started toward their room to reimburse them, but couldn't figure out how he was going to split the $5.00 three ways. He decided he would give them $1.00 each, and keep the other $2.00 for himself.
This made each one of them pay $9.00 instead of $10.00
3 x 9 = $27.00, plus the $2.00 that the manager kept = $29.00
WHERE DID THE OTHER $1.00 GO?
You need to think about how much money was paid and to whom.
The three $9 amounts are money paid, totalling $27 dollars.
$25 dollars of that went to the hotel, $2 went to manager.
It's a trick question.
All the money belonged to the men, initially. The manager stole two dollars from them.
Hence:
30 (initial) - 3 (refund) = 27
27 (new total) - 2 (stolen by manager) = 25 (price of room)
Or verbally, remember that while they paid 27, they only owed 25.
