Ill be doing the same for some of the other regions, if you have a suggestion, please add your thoughts!

Association for the Protection of the Adirondacks
Publishes Centennial History

Niskayuna, NY - Noted Adirondack author Edith Pilcher has written a Centennial History of the Association for the Protection of the Adirondacks. The history was released at the start of the Association's second century of work celebrated in Saratoga Springs on May 31, 2003.

The history covers not only the organization's development over the past 100 years but also many important topics in Adirondack 20th century history including protecting the "Forever Wild" clause in the State Constitution, defending the Forest Preserve against a variety of proposed abuses of "Forever Wild" principles such as large dams and reservoirs, the building of the Northway ( I-87) through the Park, snowmobile and motor vehicle issues, the Adirondack Park Agency Act, and the Governor Rockefeller's and Governor Cuomo's Commissions on the Adirondacks.

Also included are profiles of important 20th century Adirondack conservation leaders affiliated with the Association such as Arthur Crocker, John Apperson, Paul Schaefer and David Newhouse.

Future directions of the Association for the Protection of the Adirondacks are described, including development of its Niskayuna, New York headquarters called The Center for the Forest Preserve at the home of the late defender of Adirondack wilderness Paul Schaefer in 2003. Schaefer helped to move the Association from New York City where it was founded in 1902 to its current upstate location. The final chapter of the booklet concerns the history and highlights of the Association's Adirondack Research Library.

The 62-page history is available from the Association for $10.00 plus a $3.00 mailing cost. All Association members will receive the book for half-price. Other Adirondack books authored by Edith Pilcher include Castorland (Harbor Hill Books, 1985); Up the Lake Road (Trustees of the Adirondack Mountain Reserve, 1987); and The Constables: First Family of the Adirondacks (North Country Books, 1992).

The Association for the Protection of the Adirondacks is a non-profit, membership organization with over 2,000 members dedicated to the protection of the New York State Forest Preserve in the Adirondack and Catskill Parks through education and advocacy. Its programs include Advocates for Wilderness Stewardship and the Adirondack Research Library, as well as educational conferences and forums about the Adirondack and Catskill Park regions. For more information, visit the Association's website at www.protectadks.org.

Ah, Mt. Marcy, the first mountain I ever climbed (with my Dad and brother, in 1974, I think)!
