How did our present-day moral code come to be?
Clearly there are similarities to the Old Testament, New Testament, etc.
Are there any other historical references that have influenced our moral code, laws, etc?
The roots go back much further, but the first flowering of it is
THIS.
For the ultimate roots, look to the instincts that make any mutually cooperative pack society work - monkey troops, wolves, insect hives, that sorta thing.
Greek democracy
The socialistic model
Pegan beliefs
Eastern concepts such as Karma
before going any further, when you say "our", who does that include?
Wait, I used to know this... How does it go...
Oh, yes, here it is:
"Do unto others unless they can do back unto you."

Hi Deist:
I was thinking about the Western Civilization when I wrote this - primarily because it includes me. However your question is a good one and I would also enjoy seeing thoughts on all civilizations.

In that case, I'd say the previous posted is still valid. I'll do some thinking to expand on that list.

Western civilization....so you are refering to the moral code that accepts:
Abortion.
Murder as a punishment.
Mulitple wives.
Killing for the Catholic Church.
Killing for the Protestant Church.
Circumcision.
Sodomy.
Homosexuality.
Legal Sex at 14.
Gun ownership.
Legal drugs.
Pornography.
Monarchy.
Capitalism.
Communism......

I believe that is "do unto others before they can do unto you".
Or as it works in the animal kingdom. "Eat it before it eats you."

But maybe it won't eat you. Maybe you and it can get something better to eat together. You know, synergy.
Not that people who use that word usually have any idea what it means.
If you want to know what the word synergy means, just ask a drug addict. Trust me, he'll know.
Drugs certainly can act synergistically. Definitively, some of them.
One shouldn't discredit everything a drug user learns. Just don't lend them money.

That is very true. Once, I was a drug user. Then I became a drug abuser. Now I am neither, but the experience is one I wouldn't be without, having gone through it.
I think the roots have dried out.
BUMP for an old thread that never really got the attention it deserved IMO.

Well, you certainly don't obey the Biblical rules against necromancy.
Somebody beforehand stated that the roots of our moral codes had something to do with Greek democracy. I'd like to expand on that by stating that the Greek statesman, Solon, created his own ten commandments:

Which, I might add fit our ethics more closely than the Biblical ones do.

A point on which we totally agree.
Me three.
I think our moral code goes all the way back to when we were walking around in groups, running from bigger and toothier animals. We needed to work together / look out for one another. And that one concept can probably be found at the root of all our morals.
